For almost all of the 2012-13 NBA season the media has seized on the narrative that Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant didn’t like each other. While plenty of evidence suggested otherwise and everyone publicly denied a rift, the press has continually pushed that story. We may finally be able to put that rumor to bed. After the Los Angeles Lakers outlasted the San Antonio Spurs 91-86 at Staples Center Sunday night, Bryant sent several tweets out about his teammates. In one, he revealed that Howard had visited him in the hospital not once, but twice on Saturday. Bryant said the following on Twitter after Howard’s 26 points and 17 rebounds led Lakers to a win Sunday night: “D12 was a beast. He stopped by the hospital twice yesterday to check on big bro. that’s lub #countond12″ When asked about visiting Bryant, Howard claimed he just wanted to be there for the 34-year-old because he knew what it was like facing serious surgery. Howard underwent back surgery last spring and has been recovering for most of the season. Bryant had surgery on his ruptured left Achilles tendon on Saturday and Howard visited him before and after the procedure. Frankly, you don’t do something like that for someone you sincerely dislike. Bryant has vowed to help the Lakers in any way he can, but he is currently forced to be immobilized at home for two weeks. After that we’ll probably see him on the bench at home games if the Lakers manage to play much more this season. About a month ago Howard lauded Bryant for his win-at-all-costs mentality and claimed it had changed the way the 27-year-old center approached the game. I think it’s fair to assume two things at this point: first, Kobe Bryant will be back at some point next season, and second, Dwight Howard will be in Los Angeles holding down the fort until he returns.
