After falling in their opening games of the 2013 FIBA Eurobasket qualifying round last week, San Antonio Spurs draftee’s Adam Hanga and Davis Bertans got their first taste of victory on Tuesday, as Hanga led Hungary to a win over Austria, while Bertans helped in Latvia’s defeat of the Netherlands.

Hungary (1-1) defeated Austria 81-75 in a close game, and though Hanga wasn’t the leading scorer in the contest, he still helped his team with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting (1/4 from three), while he continued to consistently get to the free throw line as he attempted nine free throws, but only sank four of them. Hanga pulled in three rebounds, stole the ball three times, and even had a block. He did have just one assist while turning the ball over two times in 30 minutes of action.

Hanga and Hungary will move on to face Croatia in Osijek this Friday. They’re currently ranked fourth in their Group C bracket. Remember, they must place in the top two after eight games, or finish in third in their group, while also earning enough accumulated points.

Latvia (1-1) defeated the Netherlands 85-70 and Bertans was a big part of that win, as he was the second leading scorer on the team with 16 points. His hot shooting continued as he connected on 5-of-9 field goals, made three 3-pointers on 50% shooting, and what was more impressive was the fact that he earned some trips to the line as he made 3-of-6 free throws. Along with the points, Bertans pulled down seven rebounds, turned the ball over once, but also recorded two blocks in just 20 minutes of play.

Think about that, Bertans scored 16 points in just 20 minutes. His short stint of coming and working in San Antonio briefly might be paying off game-by-game as he’s now showed vast improvement in two straight games.

Latvia is currently ranked third in Group D where they currently hold a position to possibly advance to Eurobasket, but there are still six more games to go. Latvia will play against Georgia in Georgia on Friday.
