Former Duke Star Is Still An NBA Free Agent
USA TODAY Sports

Vernon Carey Jr. is coming off a year where he appeared in 11 regular season games for the Washington Wizards

The 22-year-old also played in the G League and had impressive averages of 20.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per contest while shooting 61.9% from the field and 36.4% from the three-point range in 14 regular season games (he also appeared in 14 Showcase Cup games).

This summer, the Utah Jazz  waived Carey Jr., and he still remains a free agent (on August 27), available to be signed by any team in the league.

Carey Jr. was initially the 32nd pick in the 2020 NBA Draft after one stellar season for Duke.

During his only year of college basketball, Carey Jr. averaged 17.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.6 blocks per contest while shooting 57.7% from the field and 38.1% from the three-point range.

Coming out of high school, he was ranked by ESPN as the sixth-best player in the high school class of 2019.

In addition to the Wizards, Carey Jr. has also played for the Charlotte Hornets and has career averages of 1.9 points and 1.4 rebounds per contest while shooting 47.4% from the field in 37 regular season games.

While he has not been able to put up significant numbers in the NBA, Carey Jr. has played well in the G League.

Therefore, he could be a fantastic addition to a team's training camp roster.

He will be a name to keep an eye on over the next few weeks.
