Okafor, drafted third overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2015, hasn't lived up to the hype. He averaged 17.5 points, seven rebounds and 1.2 blocks during his rookie season with the Sixers but hasn't been able to find similar production since.
Last season with the Detroit Pistons, the 25-year-old averaged 5.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.2 blocks per game in just 27 appearances. Okafor has also played for the Brooklyn Nets and New Orleans Pelicans.
The Hawks have Clint Capela as their top center, but their depth at the position is limited. Gorgui Dieng and Onyeka Okongwu are behind Capela on the depth chart.
If Okafor fails to make an impact in Atlanta, he could find himself on waivers once again.
