The Lakers announced Wednesday that Pau Gasol, who has been suffering from tendonosis in both knees, will undergo a procedure to alleviate the issue on Thursday.
The procedure, called FAST, involved debridement through the insertion a probe into both knees. The probe emits ultrasonic energy that eliminates scar tissue without damaging healthy tissue. Dr. Steven Yoon of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Group will perform the procedure.
The Lakers did not release a timetable for Gasols recovery and will not do so until after the procedure. That said, this is not a treatment after which patients are typically sidelined for long periods of time.
Gasol missed 33 games this season the most of any season in his career with various injuries. The knee issues affected him first, sidelining him for eight games in December. He also dealt with a concussion in January and a torn plantar fascia that kept him out for more than a month.
