Bruce Lee once said, "Be water, my friend." Well, to be water, you must be deep. Real deep.
Work on your craft, no matter what it is that you do for your living. Because to be deep, you need to understand your game in and out. Strategically and tactically. Mentally and physically. Consciously and subconsciously.

If you want to get into semantics, depth is a team thing. The Boston Celtics, in spite of not having Kevin Garnett nor Leon Powe for the series, were able to fend off the extremely feisty Chicago Bulls because of their superior depth.
No KG? No Powe Powe?
Bring in Big Baby. Big Baby in foul trouble? Bring in Brian Scalabrine. All series long, Glen Davis, Boston's third string power forward, was playing way above his head. In Game 7, with Big Baby in saddled with two fouls and Boston in danger of letting the game get out of control early, the red-haired Scalabrine came in and canned some gutsy jumpshots.
With Boston up eight late in the first half, Mikki Moore came in scored four straight points to help give the Celtics a nice 14-point cushion at halftime. Even Stephon Marbury was playing aggressively, if not well.
When the guys at the end of your bench are helping you (so far) successfully defend your title, that's called depth.
At the individual level, I would call this depth thing versatility, although it's ultimately just words.
But the spirit of being badass was demonstrated by Manny Pacquiao in his second round beatdown of Ricky Hatton. Tangible or intangible, Hatton had virtually nothing on Pacquiao. He wasn't nearly as fast, skilled, slick, fit nor powerful as the Pac-Man. He was just a little bigger in size, maybe a few more with his Manchester crew behind him, but when you consider that he only weighed four pounds more on fight night and that Pacquiao is the heart and soul of the Filipino people, Hatton had no chance.

Remember, you don't become like water to win; you build your depth and versatility, which allows you to become like H2O.
P.S. While I don't know jack about raising a horse to race, what I can tell you is that Mine That Bird's improbable win at the Kentucky Derby is the fruit of the collective labor and efforts of the thoroughbred's owner, breeder, trainer and jockey all coming together at the right time.
