Earlier this week, Greg Monroe and the Phoenix Suns would agree on a buyout. The Boston Celtics would soon emerge as an interested party. However, the New Orleans Pelicans were seen as favorites. But as it turns out, that’s not the case. In fact, it appears as though he’s going to the Celtics on a one-year deal.

Of course, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski has it. But there’s one reason in particular he’s going to Boston over New Orleans. Money. That appears to be the long and the short of it.

Monroe will sign a one-year, $5M deal with Celtics, league sources tell ESPN. Pelicans could only offer $2.2M.

In the meantime, the Celtics are 37-15 and first out east. Currently, they hold a two-game advantage over the Toronto Raptors. Moreover, they hold a six-game advantage over the Cleveland Cavaliers. But there’s nothing outwardly special about Monroe right now. He’s not the scorer he once was. He cannot shoot from three-point range. He’s been toiling in uncertain roles with both the Bucks and Suns in recent seasons.

But if there’s any team that can find a fit for Monroe, it’s the Celtics. And if there’s any coach that can do the same, it’s Brad Stevens. The Celtics aren’t as hot as they were at the beginning of the season, but that’s not going to stop them now.
