The Washington Bullets Wizards scored 106 points in their loss Monday to the Rockets, but coach Flip Saunders did not like how his team got two of those points.

In the third quarter, JaVale McGee was all alone with the ball on a breakaway, so he did what isn’t too surprising from a former runner-up in the slam dunk contest: threw himself the ball off the glass and jammed it home.

It was a play that earned McGee a spot on the bench for the final nine minutes of the game.

From the AP:

“Apparently if you get a fast break and throw it off the backboard in the third quarter and you’re 1-11, you’re not supposed to do stuff like that,” McGee said.

Saunders has called out his 22-year-old center several times for showboat plays. McGee defended his play, and said he didn’t regret it.

“I feel like I was trying to get the team hyped and make a good play.”

Yes, the play was a little bush league. It’s almost like going out of your way to get a triple-double in a blowout. But benching him for it? Please. The Wizards have bigger problems.

What does the old man who yells at kids to get off his lawn Saunders have to say about this?

“That’s unacceptable. Maybe I’m too old school. Save that for the All-Star game,” Saunders said. “We have some players that look for highlights instead of substance.”

I’m sorry but yes, Flip Saunders, you are old school. He was wide open, wasn’t he? He made the dunk, didn’t he? You got the two points, didn’t you? Last I checked, your team still had only one win this season. You need all the points you can get. Who cares if he showboated to get them? This isn’t CYO basketball. In fact, CYO basketball is what you might end up coaching if your team doesn’t turn things around soon.
