Jason Kidd, who joined the Knicks yesterday, joined Joe & Evan on CBS Sports Radio this afternoon where he talked about his decision, Jeremy Lin, and what number he’ll wear this season:
Did you ever think all of those years, when you were killing the Knicks, that you would be wearing a Knicks uniform?
No. I told my agent I wanted to be competitive and help, so the basketball decision was to go to the Knicks. They have better pieces.
Did you come here with the intention of backing up Jeremy Lin?
I’m hear to play for Coach Woodson and help the Knicks. Whatever coach Woodson wants me to do, I’ll play my role.
Were the Nets ever an option?
Well, we talked to the Nets and they explored every option and it just didn’t work. I would of liked to go back to the Nets, but I think it’s going to be a great rivalry, the Knicks and the Nets.
What are your thoughts on Lin?
I think he has all of the tools to be a consistent point guard in this league. A lot of people are deceived by his speed and strength. I think he can put points on the boards and also know how to get his teammates involved.
Do you know if it will be a S&T type of deal or MLE?
I don’t know how it’s gonna work. My agent, the Knicks, and Dallas are talking about different possibilities. It’s up to them.
The Eastern Conference goes through the Miami Heat now- the way the team is right now, assuming J.R. Smith/Steve Novak return, do you think this team could make a run at the Heat?
For us, we just have to focus on getting better on offense and defense. It can’t just always be Melo and Stoudemire, other guys have to step up. It’s going to be a challenge but I’m up for it.
You wore #5 with the Nets, #2 with the Mavericks- will you be wearing one of those numbers?
I plan on wearing #5, that’s the number I hope I can wear.
How pumped up are you going to be to go into the new Barclays Center and face off?
I think it’s gonna be great. You talk about Brooklyn, and they haven’t had a professional team since the Dodgers. It would be great to be there on opening night.
As a Knick fan, I’m thrilled to see you here and have as many triple doubles as you want.
I appreciate that. I’m gonna try. I just want my team to play hard and win. Hopefully we’ll be playing at the end of June.
