Utah Jazz  rookie Taylor Hendricks — a first-round lottery pick — is trending in the right direction. On Wednesday night, the No. 9 overall pick of the 2023 NBA draft scored a career-high 26 points on 10-for-14 shooting while knocking down four shots from long distance for the Salt Lake City Stars.

It’s a great sign for Jazz fans who are concerned about Hendricks not getting an opportunity at the NBA level at this stage in his career. That said, first-rounders spending some time in the G-League has been the norm as of late.

So far in 2023, lottery picks Jeff Howard, Jarace Walker, and Gradey Dick have all spent time in the G-League. Also, considering the depth that Utah has in its frontcourt, this was the path that was most likely planned for Hendricks from the get-go.

Last month, ESPN NBA insider Tim MacMahon gave his perspective on the Hendricks situation.

“I would say Danny Ainge has a pretty good track record; put some trust in him,” McMahon told Spence Checketts back in November. “Will Hardy absolutely wants to do what's best for the development of these young players, put some trust there, and a 19-year-old—I believe Hendricks is still 19, but a teenage kid not ready for the NBA, that’s not necessarily a catastrophe.”

So, can Jazz fans expect Hendricks to make it to the big club anytime soon? The answer should be yes, with the way the season has been shaping up.

Utah’s 2024 first-round pick is owed to the Oklahoma City Thunder, but it is top-ten protected. If the Jazz aren’t in striking distance to make it out of the bottom ten, then making a trade to clear a path for Hendricks is inevitable.

Current backup forward Kelly Olynyk will most likely not end the year in a Jazz uniform. With an expiring contract and not fitting in Utah’s championship window, expect the well-traveled veteran to be on the move.

However, Utah may have to be patient in moving Olynyk because his contract would be needed to help facilitate a trade if an All-Star caliber player becomes available. The NBA trade deadline is on February 8, and that’s the latest Jazz fans can expect Hendricks to be a permanent fixture in Utah.
