TEAMS: Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers
Interesting tidbit from The Journal Times on the possible future plans of former Tar Heel Jerry Stackhouse.
Another former Buck, Jerry Stackhouse, may be on the brink of wrapping up his fine 16-year pro career to pursue a career in coaching, either in the pros or college.
Stackhouse, who is playing for Atlanta, has had the distinction of playing for several coaching greats, including Dean Smith, Larry Brown, Rick Carlisle, Doug Collins and Don Nelson.
“I’m trying to transition into the next phase of my career,” Stackhouse said before a recent Bucks’ game at the Bradley Center. “I definitely want to be a head coach some day and I’m willing to pay my dues to make it happen.”
Under normal circumstances this would be a noteworthy “Stackhouse wants to be a coach” item. Since Roy Williams is looking to fill a position on his staff it takes on a slightly different flavor. What is unclear is how much experience Roy is looking for in the person he hires to replace Jerod Haase. If he wants someone who has put time in as a college coach already then Stackhouse probably won’t be considered. However if he is not concerned about experience I suppose it is possible Stackhouse could be a candidate if both parties are willing.
Still no word on who Roy plans to hire as a new assistant coach and with the April evaluation period going on right now it could be a while yet.
