Jose Calderon ended being the prized catch of the free agency period for the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavs signed the crafty point guard to a four-year $29 million deal. Calderon can play the heck out of the point guard position, but many people expected the Mavs to land a center such as Dwight Howard or Andrew Bynum. The Mavs ended up with no big named players besides Calderon, but according to ESPN Dallas, Calderon believes the Mavericks don’t need a star center to be successful. “For sure, it’s important to have a big center,” Calderon said on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM’s “Fitzsimmons and Durrett” on Thursday. “But at the end of the day, the way coach plays and if you play the right way with a guy like Dirk (Nowitzki), it makes everything a little bit easier for everybody. If you play the right way, you may not need that big a star at the 5 position. “You just need a guy who can complement Dirk, who can play defense and rebound the ball.
