After the Los Angeles Lakers held the Denver Nuggets 16 points under their season scoring average of 104 points per game in Game 1 of their seven game series and Andrew Bynum had one of the best defensive playoff performances of all time, Nuggets head coach George Karl says it was all because Bynum cheated. Karl says Bynum played an illegal zone defense on “about 30 possessions” in Game 1, which helped him get 10 blocks as part of his triple-double. Bynum didn’t exactly deny the accusations, he just admitted that he may have found a loophole in the NBA’s defensive 3-second rule. "If people cut through the lane, you can touch them and you can stand there the whole time," a smiling Bynum said when told of Karl's accusation after the Lakers' practice Monday. "That's part of the game." I’m sure George Karl knows the rule and while he may think what Bynum does is cheating, he may have just been posturing hoping that he might get in the minds of the refs...

Bynum restlessness good for Lakers

For a guy who just scored 27 points and found himself on the winning end of a second consecutive playoff game, Andrew Bynum was in a lousy mood. His answers, most of them anyway, are not worth repeating. It's not that they were offensive, just conspicuously short. Finally, someone thought to ask him why. "I left a lot on the court today," he said. "I worked way...

Mike Brown reacts to illegal defense accusation

The Nuggets threw a dizzying array of double teams at the Lakers' Andrew Bynum, but he just punished them in their 103-88 Game 1 victory Sunday over Denver with his own block party. Denver Coach George Karl felt the literal and figurative rejection, causing him to try plan B. Work the officials. "He was playing nice illegal defense," Karl told reporters, including...

Lakers' Andrew Bynum critical of his own play

For once, Kobe Bryant smiled. For once, Andrew Bynum frowned. The Lakers' two best players appeared to trade roles. Bryant usually remains stoic and serious during the NBA playoffs. Bynum often appears carefree. Yet, the circumstances surrounding their differing body language actually revealed how they are resembling each other. The Lakers' 104-100 Game 2 victory Tuesday...

Bryant, Bynum Have Grown Closer Since All-Star Weekend

Andrew Bynum has played excellent basketball over the second half of the season and into the playoffs for the Lakers.

Lakers draw lessons from Clippers' comeback effort

Once Sunday evening arrived, the Lakers could relax. They had just coasted to a double-digit Game 1 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Andrew Bynum's 10 blocks tied an NBA playoff record. The Lakers raved about their team effort and Mike Brown's preparation. But the learning hadn't stopped. No, Brown didn't hold a lengthy film session or practice. Instead, many of...

Denver aims to circumvent LA's 'illegal defense'

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Denver Nuggets still believe Andrew Bynum and the Lakers play illegal defense all the time. The Nuggets also realize it's on them to make the 7-foot shot-blocker's job a whole lot tougher, or their playoff stay will be short. "He's not going to shrink by tomorrow," Arron Afflalo said Monday before the Nuggets' practice. After getting...

Lakers remain focused despite distractions

EL SEGUNDO, CA -- Since the Lakers were embarrassingly swept out of last season's NBA Playoffs by eventual champion Dallas in the second round, nothing has been easy for the 16-time NBA Champions. Following a work stoppage, the negated trade with New Orleans (at the time owned by the league and run by David Stern) for All Star point guard Chris Paulwho ended up down the hall...

Lakers shake off aggressive Nuggets to take 2-0 series lead

LOS ANGELES -- Denver Nuggets coach George Karl has won the seventh-most games of any coach in NBA history, so he can tell when a team is ready for the playoffs and when one isn't. Karl's inexperienced Nuggets weren't prepared in their postseason opener Sunday against the Lakers, but they vowed to come back Tuesday night at Staples Center with more speed and aggressiveness...

Ground Hog Day For Nuggets As Lakers Take Game Two

Los Angeles, Calif. -- It was a similar story in Game2 as Game 1 as Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum continued their campaign of carnage on the Denver Nuggets Tuesday night at the Staples Center defeating the Nuggets 104-100. Bynum, who scored a career playoff high 27 points was impressive again even with officials on the look out for what Denver had alleged hours earlier as his...

Nuggets hoping for fast start vs. Lakers

DENVER (AP) -- Speedy point guard Ty Lawson believes more running and better rebounding will get the Denver Nuggets back into their first-round series with the Los Angeles Lakers. And coach George Karl thinks it boils down to controlling the paint, preventing Lakers center Andrew Bynum from dominating down low. Or the trick to turning this series around could be something as simple...

Nuggets' late rally changes series' dynamic

LOS ANGELES -- Despite the fact that they head back home down 2-games-to-none in their opening round playoff series against the Lakers, the Denver Nuggets aren't going back as a thoroughly beaten basketball team. Yes, Los Angeles took Game One convincingly, never trailing and finishing with a 103-88 win. Kobe Bryant scored 31 and center Andrew Bynum collected his first-ever...
