Dallas Mavericks starting point guard Jason Kidd left Friday night's game against the Utah Jazz in the first quarter with a strained right calf and did not return.
Kidd, who missed four games earlier in the season with a back injury, left the court less than three minutes after the opening tip and headed for the locker room. He was soon ruled out the rest of the game.
The Mavericks were already without top scorer Dirk Nowitzki, sidelined for a fourth straight game while he improves his conditioning and gets treatment for a sore right knee.
Nowitzki has been through multiple conditioning sessions each day and could be back for Sunday's home game against San Antonio.
''I'd think (on Saturday) we'll know more for sure where we're at,'' coach Rick Carlisle said of Nowitzki's status for Sunday.
Also sidelined for Dallas was starting guard Delonte West (strained right hamstring). West said he would be back for Sunday's game.
Key reserve Vince Carter returned for the Mavericks after missing five games with a sprained left foot.

Dirk Nowitzki threw on the headset and grabbed a microphone to call a few plays Wednesday night. Heck, the Mavericks superstar is sitting out a few games to improve his conditioning so why not do a little play-by-play for a few minutes in the first half.
Fortunately for those watching at home, while Nowitzki was on the mic, one of the best alley-opps of the season took place. Jason...

Dirk Nowitzki’s Dallas Mavericks are tied for the Southwest Division lead at 12-8. Though the defending champs haven’t looked like the best team in the NBA through the first part of the season, Dirk still believes his team is the favorite to reach the NBA Finals.

Dirk Nowitzki's occasional stints as a TV analyst have led to catchphrases including "Take Dat With You," which became an unofficial rallying cry for last year's Mavericks. Dirk's grunts and ************ are funny, for sure—even if sometimes in a "does my breath smell funny" or "does my car sound funny"...
Dirk Nowitzki returned for the Mavs, but Jason Kidd is out for at least a week.
The Dallas Mavericks were finally presented with their championship rings Wednesday night. The ring contains 250 diamonds and is 10 karats. Jason Kidd, Dirk Nowitzki, and Jason Terry all had input on the design of the ring. The top of the ring, which is made of 14-karat white gold, the edges read “World Champions,” with [...]
DIRK NOWITZKI is obviously auditioning for Stan Burrett’s job on SportsCenter. The six-foot-eleven MC got on the mic during the Mavs-Timberwolves game Wednesday and came up with his own brand of play-by-play after teammate BRANDAN WRIGHT throws down an alley-oop…

Prompted by his coach and management, Dirk Nowitzki took a break from playing in NBA games to get his body right, which led some in the local media to publish some outlandish claims about his conditioning and overall dedication (or lack thereof.) Nowitkzi was given a chance to respond. From the Star-Telegram: “Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki says he is much better after...

The Dallas Mavericks seem happy they don't have to worry about any more ceremonies honoring their first NBA championship.
