I guarantee when the season started, the New York Knicks didn’t think they’d be 6-6 after 12 games. After acquiring Tyson Chandler in the offseason to go along with Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire, the Knicks looked like they could contend for one of the top spots in the East.

Now, after a disappointing .500 start to the season, the Knicks are hoping Baron Davis can get the team on the right track….

If you read that and thought that the Knicks are probably hopeless, you’re not alone, but ESPN is reporting that Davis could be back at practice next week and coach Mike D’Antoni seems ready to throw him right into the action.

"Well, we'll have a little adjustment phase [when Davis comes back] but we're adjusting with a really good point guard, so that's an adjustment we'll make readily," D'Antoni said.

I am not the biggest Baron Davis fan, especially in the last few years. I think the Cavaliers were smart in using the amnesty clause on him and I think the Knicks were dumb for taking him on, even if they did get him for the veteran minimum. I think he’s a distraction to any team and he does more harm than good.

With all that being said, the Knicks need a point guard. They started off the year with Toney Douglas, but have started Iman Shumpert and Mike Bibby since. They’re 5th in the league in turnovers and they need to get someone in at point guard that can distribute to their All-Stars effectively.

I don’t think Baron Davis is the answer and he’s suddenly going to save this team, but he is probably the best option at this point. The Knicks need something drastic to change or else they’ll be continuing their season as a .500 team with a new coach.

Even if Davis is going to practice in a week, he still probably won’t be ready to play until the end of the month or early next month. That may not be quick enough. The Knicks need to get something going quickly or else a season that started with so much potential is going to be a loss.
