Now that the NY Knicks landed Andrea Bargnani in a trade, what is up Glen Grunwald’s sleeve next? Point guard has been a hotly contested issue since the Knicks were ousted in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Armed with a taxpayer mini mid priced at 3+ million a year, or a veteran minimum contract, the Knicks have some options this early in free agency.
One point guard that has been on the Knicks radar for years is Aaron Brooks. The pint sized (6 foot at best), lightning quick point guard out of Oregon 4 years ago built his name as apart of the Houston Rockets. His best year was 9/10 season where he started all 82 games averaging 19 points and 5 assists per game. From that point on his playing time decreased. During the NBA lockout he had a brief stint in China, then returning as a member of the Sacramento Kings.
In his brief stint back in Houston this year he was considered the 3rd string point guard behind Jeremy Lin and Patrick Beverley. As of 6/30 the Rockets, in a cost cutting move in hopes to acquire Dwight Howard, waived Aaron Brooks.
Now a free agent, which and what direction does Aaron head in? The New York Knicks present a chance for Aaron to become the back-up point guard behind Raymond Felton. With the uncertainty of the return of Pablo Prigioni, Aaron Brooks could find himself quite a bit of minutes all year long. As the back-up point guard Brooks could do what he does best: push the ball at a fast pace, drain 3’s and be a pesky guard on the defensive end of the court. New York is in desperate need of youth at the PG position. Aaron’s fast pace game could give the Knicks the much-needed push that hurt them dearly in the playoffs.
