Imagine yourself the General Manager of the NY Knicks. Sitting behind the desk and in charge of one of the most powerful teams in the NBA. If you look over the roster and look at your positives and negatives, you can see that 2 glaring needs are glowing. NY needs a solid big to help the injured frontline and most importantly, a back-up point guard who can score and create. This is a must for the struggling J-Kidd and Pablo Prigioni.
Enter Luke Ridnour, Luke is a 6’2” 175 lb. point guard that has great shooting skills, especially off screens and picks. This year he is averaging 12 points and 4 assists on 44% from the field. He can drive the lane and create for his teammates. This is something that Knicks do not have, besides Carmelo Anthony of course. JR Smith can create, but he is not a point guard and should not be put in the situation to handle the ball and create for others.
Luke is that answer. At first I was not interested in Luke. I think his defensive deficiencies are too obvious and the Knicks have too many one-way players. However, New York is in need of a scorer who runs the point to relieve some of the pressure that is on Raymond Felton.
What kind of deal can be made? If you look at the Knicks roster you can see some players that are not helping and can be put into a small package to get Luke. Everything depends on what the Minnesota Timberwolves would like in return. If Minny is looking to dump salary, this deal could work. Luke is under contract for 4 million this year and next. If Minny wants to swap Luke Ridnour for Ronnie Brewer’s 1 million, Kurt Thomas’ 1.3 and Renaldo Balkman’s expiring deal (yes he is still counts against the cap) to get to that 4 million mark, then NY and Minny can get a deal done. Minny would most likely cut Thomas and maybe keep Ronnie for the rest of the year, resulting in 4 million off their cap for next year.
The Knicks would add a much-needed player to their roster for the next 2 years and also create another roster spot to add a big man like Kenyon Martin or someone else. This kills 2 birds with 1 stone.
The New York Knicks need help in many positions, but this deal is possible and realistic in my point of view.
