Mike Woodson touched on some of Knicks basketball most pressing issues:
Woody not committing to Shumpert as the starting SG could be posturing. Or it could mean Woody will go w/a 2 PG alignment w/Shump at SF
Woodson says he doesn’t know who is starting yet. Says Ray, Tyson, Melo will start. I assume Shumpert will as well.
Woodson said Beno is “major” addition: “He can run a basketball team & if he’s got to make a big shot, he’s capable of doing that.”
Mike Woodson isn’t sure who he will put around Melo, Tyson & Felton in the starting five. That will be determined in training camp.
Woodson on Shumpert starting at SG: “We don’t know, we’ve got to see. You’ve got to go in there & you’ve got to earn a spot.”
Woodson was asked about Shumpert starting at SG. He smiled and said he wasn’t sure. Said that would be decided in training camp.
On Tyson Chandler’s health, Mike Woodson says, “He’s back normal ready to go. He’s put a lot of work in this summer.
Woodson, speaking at Garden of Dreams event, says he’s unsure when Bargnani (illness) will return to the court.
Many subjects were touched during this convo, but some that stood out to me were Shumpert’s insertion into the line-up, and who would start around Melo, Tyson and Ray. What makes the most sense is Shumpert at the 2 guard. Shump needs the chance to step up and become the perimeter lock down defender we all think he is. Having him come off the bench will create a logjam in the backcourt.
As far as who should start in the frontcourt with Melo and Tyson is a debate. I would prefer Bargnani to start at PF and Melo return back to his natural position of SF. However, the Knicks had recent success with Melo at the PF. If they go in another direction, we could see Metta at the SF and Melo at the PF. However, this would create a logjam in the frontcourt. Stat and Barg’s off the bench would create a numbers crunch and all the problems that come with it. Stay tuned!
