Kobe

We have all heard this saying time and time again when it comes to playoffs in any sport: “defense wins championships.” For many coaches, those three words are preached throughout the year, specifically during the playoffs. In the NBA, the ability to take a charge and draw an offensive foul may be one of the more important attributes to a quality NBA defensive player. However, Laker star guard and future Hall-of-Famer Kobe Bryant apparently refuses to take a charges during games, according to a tweet from the always reliable Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports:

Kobe says he doesn’t take offensive charges because he is fearful of injuring his back like Larry Bird and Scottie Pippen did.

— Marc J. Spears (@SpearsNBAYahoo) May 15, 2012

To me, this was extremely shocking for a variety of reasons. Mainly, I had never thought about it before, but I do not know the last time I saw Kobe Bryant take a charge in a game. I understand his concern, and it is a legitimate point, but for the fear of injury to stop you from taking a charge seems a little selfish as a teammate. Taking a charge is known as one of the ultimate symbols of being a team player, and is the epitome of literally putting your body on the line for the sake of your team. For the leader of your team to come out and say that he refuses to do so probably doesn’t go over well with some of the guys in that Laker locker room.

Let’s be honest, the Lakers have had their ups and downs this season from a team chemistry perspective, and something like this certainly doesn’t help matters. I would be curious to hear what Derek Fisher, one of the most well-known charge takers and longtime teammate of Bryant would have to say about this quote, and how long Kobe’s “no charge taking” policy has been in effect.

It will also be interesting to see what kind of media coverage this receives over the next few days. Stay tuned.

Kobe reaches out to LeBron to see what else he can do to get Mike Brown fired

Running out of ideas and time, Kobe Bryant has reached out to fellow superstar LeBron James to solicit James’ opinion on other ways Bryant can get Lakers coach Mike Brown fired. Kobe won't take charges

Sacrificing your body to take a charge is one of the great momentum builders in basketball. Absorbing the hit from an opposing player coming at you like a freight train takes its toll on the body, but for a lot of players the turnover is worth the sacrifice. Not for Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant. To paraphrase Meatloaf, Kobe would do anything for his team, but he won’t do that...

(Eds: With AP Photos.) By TIM DAHLBERG AP Sports Columnist Kobe Bryant hit his only shot that really mattered, then celebrated by slapping hands with Justin Timberlake. James and Bryant come up small in the clutch

For my money Kobe Bryant and LeBron James are the two best players in the NBA, with Kevin Durant right are there trail. However in there last playoff games both Bryant and James came up small when it mattered the most. In game two between the Miami Heat and the Indiana Pacers LeBron James was the best player on the court for 46 minutes but at the end of the game he...

Lakers can't match Thunder's energy, intensity

OKLAHOMA CITY If the Los Angeles Lakers are tired, no one was saying so Tuesday. If they are worn out, no one admitted it. And if the Lakers are serious about making a series out of this Western Conference semifinal, it's going to be hard to get anyone to believe it. Why should we at this point? No reason to think so. Two days after extending their season with a Game 7 win...

Video: Lakers Down 0-2 to Thunder

With two minutes left in the game and the L.A. Lakers up by 7, it looked like Kobe Bryant and the Lakers would be able to bounce back for the Game 2 victory after getting dominated by the Oklahoma City Thunder 119-90 in Game 1. Kevin Durant and the Thunder had a different plan in mind. The Thunder went on a 9-0 run in the last two minutes, thanks to two forced turnovers by Durant...
