On Thursday afternoon the NBA announced the starters for the league’s February 17 All-Star Game. There weren’t any surprises among those selected, but the headline was that Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant was elected to his NBA-record 15th consecutive All-Star start. Bryant finished with 1,591,437 votes, besting Miami’s LeBron James by about 7,800 to finish as the leading vote-getter. By earning a start, Bryant broke a tie with Shaquille O’Neal, Jerry West and Karl Malone for most consecutive starts. Bryant is now a 16-time All-Star and has been named a starter every year since 2000. That’s pretty incredible. The West will boast a starting lineup that includes Lakers center Dwight Howard, Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul and forward Blake Griffin, and Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant. Durant was the MVP of last year’s game. The East will be represented by Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett and point guard Rajon Rondo, the Miami Heat’s LeBron James and Dwyane Wade and New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony. This is just yet another record that has fallen to Bryant, and his incredible career doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Entering Thursday night’s game against the Heat, Bryant was leading the NBA in scoring (29.9 points per game) and was shooting a career-best 47.8 percent from the field.
