Kobe is down in Brazil taking in all things World Cup, but took time to sit down for an interview with ESPN, one of the main things he was asked about were some jabs about his contract from Team USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann. When news broke weeks prior of Landon Donovan not making the World Cup team, Klinsmann got rather defensive and used Kobe as a metaphor: “This always happens in America. Kobe Bryant, for example — why does he get a two-year contract extension for $50 million? Because of what he is going to do in the next two years for the Lakers? Of course not. Of course not. He gets it because of what he has done before. It makes no sense. Why do you pay for what has already happened?” Kobe was all laughs though, while in town to root on the Klinsmann coached team, he stated: “I thought it was pretty funny. I thought it was pretty comical actually. I see his perspective. But the one perspective that he’s missing from an ownership point of view is that you want to be part of an ownership group that is rewarding its players for what they’ve done while balancing the team going forward. If you’re another player in the future and you’re looking at the Lakers organization, you want to be a part of an organization that takes care of its players while at the same time planning for the future. Jurgen is a coach, a manager. He’s not a GM or owner of the franchise. When you look at it from that perspective, it changes a little bit. But you probably could have used another player as an example.”   One would have to agree Klinsmann wasn’t at all wrong in his analysis, it is Klinsmann’s job to make sure his best players of NOW are on the team. Emotions in sports are a dangerous combo, but if anything Klinsmann simply shouldn’t worry about how much Kobe makes, comes off a little Petty Crocker-ish. Surely though, it’s not the first time someone’s called Kobe overpaid. He’ll just laugh to the bank. [ProBasketballTalk]

Los Angeles Lakers: Late picks the Lakers can acquire

As the Los Angeles Lakers gear up for the draft next week they enter with only with a first round pick and numerous positions to fill.  They are limited in what they can offer other teams for a second round pick and would be hard pressed to consider trading down with their current selection to get an extra pick in the second round. With so many needs at almost every position the...

Kobe Bryant recently signed a two-year, $48.5 million contract extension with the Lakers. While exorbitant contracts have become quite common in American sports, not everyone is in agreement. Kobe Bryant is a huge soccer fanatic. Not sure whether or not Kobe Bryant was happy for Tim Duncan winning his 5th NBA Championship, but he was crystal clear when asked how he’d feel if Duncan won his 6th title before Kobe got around to doing it. “If you ask me if I’m okay with Tim [winning his sixth championship], I’m not,” Bryant told ESPN while on location for the World Cup in Brazil. “I’m not okay with...

Kobe Bryant’s gives classic response about scoring 30 points when he was 17

After 17 years in the NBA, the legendary Kobe Bryant has scored 30 points many, many times. However, before he entered the league, he took part in a summer league, full of people older than him. Kobe Bryant: Jurgen Klinsmann’s Comments ‘Comical,’ Lack Perspective

Kobe Bryant Is Not A Fan Of Jurgen Klinsmann’s Comments About Kobe Bryant

In explaining why Landon Donovan was left off the U.S. World Cup roster, Jurgen Klinsmann invoked Kobe Bryant and not necessarily in the most flattering way as he said that both were over the hill as players. Klinsmann went on to say that the contract extension which the Lakers gave Kobe was nonsensical because it was a way to reward Kobe for his past performance rather than for...

Lakers free agency targets for 2014 and beyond

Let’s face it, the past two seasons couldn’t have been any more depressing for me and my fellow Laker fans. Many causes of which give the Laker faithful reason to look forward to the future.  Filling out the majority of this year’s team with one-year contracts (in addition to several expiring contracts) gives the Lakers the opportunity to take a chance at some high profile...

Remembering the Pistons' improbable NBA championship exactly a decade ago

On the afternoon of June 15, 2004, I was getting ready for work, and I heard the neighborhood kids playing basketball. They had been out there 100 times over the years, shooting at a rickety old basket that they could roll into place. Like kids for decades, they were all picking their favorite players. Over the years, the favorites had moved from Michael Jordan to Grant Hill to Kobe...
