The Los Angeles Lakers announced they have hired Kurt Rambis and Johnny Davis as assistant coaches. Rambis is very familiar with Laker land. He was an assistant coach in L.A. from 1994-1999, then had a short stint as head coach in the 1998-1999 season. Rambis went away from Los Angeles for a couple of seasons before returning as an assistant from 2004 through 2009. He provided support for Phil Jackson and helped lead the Lakers to two NBA Championships (2002 and 2009) during that timeframe. Rambis would eventually move on to take the Minnesota head coaching job from 2009-2011. Many people were shocked to find out current Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni reached out to Rambis. The former Lakers player and assistant spoke to http://www.lakersnation.com/ about the hire. “Mike D’Antoni came to me several weeks ago and asked if I’d be interested in the job,” Rambis said, in an interview with Lakers Nation. “Quite frankly, I was a little bit shocked about that, and for him, he said it was a no-brainer, and I jumped on it right away. I said, ‘This would be great, I think it would work out well for both of us.” Mike D’Antoni respects Rambis knowledge of the game and couldn’t pass up this opportunity to bring him on board. “Kurt is a great basketball mind, extremely good at working with big men and his experience as a head coach in this league is going to prove very helpful to our staff. Johnny is a two-time NBA head coach with years of experience playing as well as coaching in this league. The vast array of NBA knowledge he brings to the table will be invaluable to us.”
