Which Kobe Bryant number will the Lakers retire?

In a meeting with season ticket holders on Sunday, Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak said the current season is "dedicated to Kobe and his farewell."

Of course, once the Kobe Bryant Farewell Tour wraps, the Lakers will honor him every game by hanging his jersey up high above the court at Staples Center.

One hitch. Bryant wore two jersey numbers — 8 and 24 — during his tenure in L.A., and Kupchak isn't entirely sure which one will be retired. Reported by the Los Anegels Times, the GM said:

"I don't know the answer. Obviously it's going to be 8, 24 or it could be both."

Surely L.A. isn't planning to retire Bryant's jersey the second he takes off his kicks for good, but it's still an interesting conundrum to have — especially given that the Lakers saw success with Bryant rocking both numbers. They won three titles while he sported No.8 and won their 2009 and 2010 championships while he has worn No. 24, his current number.

In those most recent championship runs, Bryant was named Finals MVP. If that should be a factor in how they choose to decide which digit to retire, he never won a Finals MVP donning No. 8.

The LA Times has even set up a poll for fans to vote on which number — or both, if they choose — the Lakers should retire in Bryant's honor.
