“The Decision” is in, and LeBron James is headed to Miami, where he’ll team up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to form the NBA’s new “Big Three.”
At this point, it isn’t at all clear who else will be playing for the Heat this season. Miami has just two other players under contract – guard Mario Chalmers and forward Michael Beasley. And team president Pat Riley is actively shopping Beasley in order to free up even more space under the salary cap.
Miami also reportedly has an offer out to swingman Mike Miller – on the order of five years and $25 million. The remainder of their roster will likely be filled with minimum-salary players. Riley is reportedly hoping to bring back players like ex-Knick Quentin Richardson and Joel Anthony – both of whom played for Miami last season – and Jason Williams, who teamed with Wade in the backcourt on Miami’s 2006 championship squad.
If Beasley isn’t moved for cap space, he could be shipped out for other players. Miami and Portland have reportedly discussed a Beasley/Andre Miller swap.
Knick management has to be disappointed with James’ decision, but Donnie Walsh has backup plans. Now that LeBron’s intentions are known, Walsh can proceed with the sign-and-trade deal that will send David Lee to Golden State in exchange for Anthony Randolph, Kelenna Azubuike and Ronny Turiaf. Walsh is also expected to acquire a point guard – Charlotte’s Raymond Felton and Milwaukee’s Luke Ridnour are potential targets.
Rumors were also circulating today about a potential sign-and-trade deal that would send free agent Al Harrington to the Orlando Magic, though it’s not clear what the Knicks would receive in return.
