Shoot The Moon NBA All-Star Weekend will begin Feb. 14, and by Feb. 16, the Portland Trail Blazers‘ Damian Lillard will have made history. It was announced Thursday that Damian Lillard will be participating in the NBA’s three-point contest on All-Star Saturday. The contest is the fifth that the sophomore has committed to, which is an NBA record. Before the season began, Lillard told CBSSports’ Matt Moore that he wanted to be an All-Star. “I always had high expectations for myself,” Lillard said. “Why not be an All-Star? I believe it can happen.” Not only is it going to happen, but it will come along with four other events. Lillard will be doing just about everything, and that’s sure to help build his brand as a legitimate superstar. Rising Stars Challenge To begin the weekend, Lillard will participate in the Rising Stars Challenge. He was drafted second by Team Hill, coached by former player and current analyst Grant Hill, and he’ll be joining the likes of Andre Drummond, Bradley Beal and Harrison Barnes against Team (Chris) Webber. Let’s go #TeamHill! @realgranthill33 #BBVACompassRisingStars — Damian Lillard (@Dame_Lillard) February 7, 2014 This type of game suits Lillard’s skill set, as it features a plethora of young players, a fast pace and a whole lot of points. That said, don’t expect a huge contribution when it comes to this sophomore. Lillard will likely use this as practice for his other competitions. He’ll take a whole bunch of threes, he’ll make some no-look passes and you’ll likely see one or two finishes well above the rim. Being named to this game is an honor, but his minutes should be limited, as it’s just the tip of his All-Star iceberg. Can Damian Lillard repeat as Skills Champ? Skills Challenge Lillard is the reigning Rookie of the Year, but he’s also the reigning Skills Challenge champion. He’s back to defend his title, and he’ll be going up against some big names in the process. This contest won’t be the highlight of his weekend, but it offers him a great opportunity to add another trophy to his collection. He’s a quick point guard with excellent ball-handling skills, and he has to be considered one of the favorites entering the competition. Three-Point Contest The Trail Blazers have earned a reputation as lights-out three-point shooters, and Lillard is one of the biggest reasons why. On the year, Lillard is shooting 40.5 percent from downtown. He’s attempted the third-most three-pointers in the league behind Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, and he’s made the third-most, trailing those same two Golden State Warriors. The only disappointing news is that Lillard won’t be accompanied by Wesley Matthews. His fellow backcourt member is just as deserving of the opportunity, but Rip City will have to rely on Lillard to bring it the franchise’s first three-point title. Dunk Contest This is the one that has fans most excited, but it’s also the one that has some perplexed across the Association. We’ve seen Lillard dunk many times, but the question is: Is he a “Dunk Contest Dunker.” In fact, detractors of this decision will argue that he only has eight dunks on the year, although Lillard’s response is about as good as it comes. #Blazers Damian Lillard out to prove he’s a dunker: “8 dunks means my legs are fresh” Going for 5 at All-Star Weekend — Chris Haynes (@ChrisBHaynes) February 7, 2014 Speaking of Lillard’s competition, this year’s battle should be entertaining. Paul George, Terrence Ross and John Wall will join Lillard, along with Harrison Barnes and Ben McLemore. There are a number of reasons why Lillard shouldn’t participate in the contest, but the fact is, he’s making history by participating in all five events. He’s shooting the moon, and the hope is that his fresh legs will do him right all the way through the weekend. All-Star Game Lillard is all over the board when it comes to All-Star Weekend, but this is the one he wants the most. Lillard was named to his first All-Star appearance this season, making him the only sophomore to be chosen (before the likely inclusion of Anthony Davis). When he and LaMarcus Aldridge enter the game, it will be the first time since 1994 that two Blazers participate in the same All-Star Game. The only question left is: How will he perform? Will he see significant minutes? Will he play more above the rim or beyond the three-point line? Lillard will be just about everywhere come All-Star Weekend, and if you’re a Blazers fan, soak in every minute and be proud of your franchise point guard representing Rip City. Damian Lillard To Participate In A Record 5 All-Star Weekend Events

Many NBA players view All-Star Weekend as a chance to rest up, kick back, and enjoy some much deserved time off. But Trail Blazers sophomore point guard Damian Lillard doesn’t have that same kind of attitude. He rather has the attitude of doing as much as you can during the weekend and make the most of the opportunity to have some fun on the basketball court. That is why he is...

Damian Lillard to make history at NBA All Star weekend

Damian Lillard is no stranger to doing things his way in the NBA. The Portland Trail Blazers point guard made that much clear in the Chicago draft combine in the summer of 2012, when he was the only one of the top 10 prospects on hand who chose to take part in all the drills rather than duck the competition for fear of hurting his standing. Nearly two years, a Rookie of the Year...

Damian Lillard will be really busy in New Orleans

Every All-Star Weekend, there seems to be one guy, typically a young player, who announces himself to the rest of the NBA. In 2009, Kevin Durant played on the national stage for the first time and dominated the Rookie-Sophomore Game. Kyrie Irving did the same in his 3-point barrage in Orlando during the Rookie-Sophomore Game and repeated it last year in his first All-Star appearance...

Trail Blazers-Timberwolves Preview

The Portland Trail Blazers have suffered half of their road losses this season in a little under three weeks. The Trail Blazers will look to salvage a split of their four-game trip when they close the swing against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night. Portland dropped only five of its first 20 games away from home, one of which was a 120-109 defeat in Minneapolis on Dec...

Blazers beat the Timberwolves thanks to career night from CJ McCollum

With the negative narrative building and the heat rising, the Trail Blazers’ bench — if for only a night — was able to quiet the naysayers. CJ McCollum had a career outing, Joel Freeland had one of his most prolific games of the season and the maligned bench proved to be the difference as the Blazers defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 117-110 Saturday night at the Target...

Aldridge leads Blazers past Wolves 117-110

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- LaMarcus Aldridge scored 16 of his 26 points in the second half and Wesley Matthews added 21 to help the Portland Trail Blazers hold off the injury-depleted Minnesota Timberwolves 117-110 Saturday night. Aldridge had six points during Portland's game-deciding 13-1 run in the fourth quarter. Corey Brewer led Minnesota with 26 points and Ricky Rubio scored a...

Paul George, John Wall highlight dunk contest participants

It appears Paul George will be in the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest during NBA All-Star Weekend, after all. George will be joined by John Wall and Damian Lillard, according to Marc Stein of ESPN. These three guys will added much-needed starpower to one of the weekend’s biggest events. Complete list of NBA Slam Dunk competitors: Terrence Ross (2013 Slam Dunk champion) – Toronto Raptors...

Watch: George Hill duels Damian Lillard

Tweet Indiana Pacers point guard George Hill may be one of the most under-appreciated players by fans  in the league. Friday night, he matched Portland Trail Blazers All-Star Damian Lillard bucket for bucket as the two dueled it out in the Pacers 118-113 overtime win: George finished with a career-high 37 points, nine rebounds and eight assists while...

Trail Blazers-Pacers Preview

The Portland Trail Blazers have been struggling offensively and are having problems winning on the road. That's a bad combination heading into a visit with the Indiana Pacers. If the Blazers are going to recover their elite offensive form Friday night in Indianapolis, they'll have to do it against the NBA's best home team and stingiest defensive unit. Indiana (38-10...

Report: Damian Lillard To Enter Dunk Contest, Could Make All-Star History

Lillard has accepted a bid to enter the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, CSN Northwest reported Wednesday, joining a star-studded roster that also reportedly includes John Wall, Paul George and Terrence Ross. That will be just one course of Lillard’s...
