A couple months back Steven A. Smith brought up the idea of the Clippers trading for Doc Rivers and while at the time it seemed like Steven A. Smith just being his normal crazy self, it seems that at least part of what he was saying holds some truth. The Celtics and Clippers seem to be in an intense stand off for this trade that both teams want to happen. Who will give in first though? Photo Credit: AP Photo/Jae C. Hong This is what the Celtics want the trade to be: Clippers Trade: DeAndre Jordan (2 years, 22 million) Eric Bledsoe (1 year 2.5 million then he becomes a restricted free agent) 2 1st round picks For: Celtics Trade: Kevin Garnett (2 years, 23 million) Jason Terry or Courtney Lee (2 years, 10.5 million/3 years, 16.3 million) Doc Rivers (who the Celtics would let out of his contract so he could coach the Clippers) For the Clippers, This is what they proposed: Clippers Trade: DeAndre Jordan (2 years, 22 million) 1 1st round Pick For: Celtics Trade: Kevin Garnett (2 years, 23 million) Doc Rivers Now both these trades seem very one sided, but that is how trade proposals work. You always ask for more than you expect to get back. So that means the true trade lies somewhere in the middle, but where in the middle will it land. As reported by sites such as ESPN and Yahoo Sports, the key piece that is keeping this trade from happening is the Clippers unwillingness to include Eric Bledsoe. The Celtics say they will not do the trade without Bledsoe, but the Clippers do not seem to be caving in to those demands. The question then becomes who will cave first? I believe it will be the Celtics (not just because I am a Clipper fan) because they have to get what they can and start the rebuilding process. For the Clippers they can easily stop trade talks and go with Hollins or Shaw as their head coach, but for the Celtics, there is no way Doc could come back to coach after this whole fiasco. This means that I think the trade will not include Bledsoe, but still would be a good move for the rebuilding Celtics if they execute the trade below: Clippers Trade: DeAndre Jordan (2 years, 22 million) Caron Butler (1 year, 8 million) Willie Green (2 years, 3 million both years are team options) 1st round pick (maybe 2) For: Celtics Trade: Kevin Garnett (2 years, 23 million) Jason Terry (2 years, 10.5 million) Courtney Lee (3 years, 16.3 million) Doc Rivers This has been the trade I have been saying will happen since the rumors really came to life on June 15th. I even tweeted it here, and it is the only move that makes sense for both teams. Why would the Clippers do this trade? This allows them to get an elite coach in Doc Rivers and not have to give up the prized young point guard Eric Bledsoe (who I think might be a bit overrated now). They also get Kevin Garnett who can help teach Blake Griffin (assuming they would not go right around and flip him and Bledsoe for Dwight Howard) and will be great for pick and pop with CP3 (assuming he re-signs). Also this would probably lead to the Celtics buying out Pierce for 5 million, and he would probably end up coming to the Clippers to come play with KG and Doc. Why would the Celtics do this trade? They have no better options! They have to get rid of Doc now, and also who wants to pay a coach 7 million a year for a rebuilding team? Seems like a waste in my opinion. So they get rid of their bad contracts and KG (who would retire anyway if they went into rebuilding mode) and bring in a young and athletic center, Deandre Jordan, a expiring contract, Caron Butler, and Willie Green (a cheap player who they could decide not to keep since he has a team option both years remaining on his contact) Their other options are either: 1. Do not trade, Keep Doc, KG and Pierce and try to make one more run at the title. Yet, with the team they have they would be lucky to make it out of the first round. Or 2. Do not trade, go into rebuilding mode and buyout Pierce. That will lead to KG retiring which will in turn lead to Doc quitting and going into commentating. And this situation ends up with them getting nothing in return for those pieces. So make the call Celtics, the Clippers seem to have the leverage in this situation and if the Celtics want to get anything for their Aging Big 3 (KG, Pierce and Doc) they better act fast before the Clippers move on and go with Shaw or Hollins as their Head Coach. -Noah
