When Martell Webster was signed late in the offseason, I thought he would come in and play some backup shooting guard and get a little run at small forward as well. I liked the signing because I thought we needed some more bench scoring, but I didn't have huge expectations by any means. Little did I know he was going to turn into my favorite Wizard, both on and off the court. To say he more than surpassed my expectations wouldn't be cutting it. I know that when you look at a guy who averaged only 11.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists that you shouldn't be raving too much about their production. But Webster played a key role on  at times even carried the team when injuries mounted. He had seven games of 20+ points, including the one where he went 7-for-10 from 3- point land in route to a career high 34 points. Webster has shown he can be the deep threat shooting guard the Wizards need, and imagine how effective he can be with a full season of running with John Wall and Bradley Beal as opposed to limited time with them due to injuries. If the Wizards can bring Martell back at the right price -- see MLE -- they certainly shouldn't hesitate. Scoring: His scoring was up and down all season, and I blame that more on the night-in-night-out rotation changes due to injuries and Randy Wittman's rotating doghouses. His 3-point shooting, however, did not suffer as he remained one of the best long ball shooters in the league this season. In a perfect world, Webster would get 30-35 minutes per night, maybe even a few more depending on how hot his three ball was. He only played in 38 games where he logged at least 30 minutes. During those games, he averaged 15.4 points. His scoring is not in question, and he has the chance to be the key third wing scorer that this team has needed for a long time. With just a little bit of health and a lot of running with Wall and Beal, Webster could be the perfect complimentary scorer. Court Awareness: I would say Webster's court awareness is above average. He is a smart player and quite often finds himself in the right spots, whether it be playing the lanes on defense or finding an open spot on a fast break for a kick out jump shot. His awareness is an area we don't have to worry about. Offensive Value: This year his offense fluctuated much like his playing time along with everyone elses. There were nights when he wasn't much of a factor, and there were nights when he was the focal point of the offense and carried the team on his back. Again, with 100% health, his value would be greatest as a third wing scorer who can give you 15-18 points per night. Defensive Value: Martell could stand to be a bit better of an on-ball defender, but honestly who couldn't? Like I mentioned before, I believe he is a smart player and knows how to play the lanes well. He doesn't do much to hurt you from a defensive standpoint. He plays tough on that end of the floor. Hustle/Effort: The effort is always there. You rarely see him taking plays off and he is one of those guys that, when on the floor you, know what you are going to get. This is another category where you don't have to worry about Webster slacking off. Basketball Swag: As my man Gilbert Arenas would say...."his swag was phenomenal". Martell Webster seems like a great dude, both on and off the floor. That is why he became my favorite Wizard this year. I mean come on, this guy Unveiled The Wizard!!! By the way, if you haven't seen any of his post-game interviews, check out the Wizards Extreme YouTube channel to get a taste of off-court Martell. Final Grade: I can't go handing out A's because this team still was horrible. But in terms of on-court play and off-court locker room presence, I don't think there is anyone else I would prefer to have on this team than Martell Webster. Overall I give him a solid B. Scratch that, just watched another YouTube interview....he gets a B+.
