The Dallas Mavericks and head coach Jason Kidd agreed to a contract extension in early May. Details of the extension were uncertain once the news was initially announced. NBA insider Marc Stein recently reported that league sources say the extension adds two years to the Mavs head coach’s previous four-year extension.

The original report stated that Kidd and the Mavericks had agreed to a multi-year deal. Now it appears that it is a two-year extension for Kidd.

Jason Kidd, a Hall of Fame player, has found success for the most part in Dallas as a head coach. He led the team to the Western Conference Finals during his first season. The Mavs took a step in the wrong direction in 2022-23, ultimately missing the postseason altogether. Dallas rebounded in 2023-24, and now they are battling for a spot in the Western Conference Finals once again.

The Mavs lead the Oklahoma City Thunder 2-1 in the Western Conference Semifinals as of this story’s writing. Dallas is playing a quality brand of basketball. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving continue to lead the way, while players such as PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford have made important impacts as well.

Kidd will advance further in the NBA playoffs than 2023-24 NBA Coach of the Year Mark Daigneault if the Mavericks win the series. That would be quite the accomplishment given Daigneault’s impressive coaching prowess throughout the regular season.

Kidd’s message to the Mavs fanbase is clear. He wants to lead the team to their first championship since 2011.

“We’re trying to win a championship,” Kidd told reporters after agreeing to the contract extension. “We’re playing a very talented team in Oklahoma City. Understanding that the foundation is being built. Our ultimate goal is to win a championship and hopefully we can do that here in the next three years.”

The Mavericks have built an impressive all-around roster. They feature a mixture of star-power and depth. Dallas will have an opportunity to compete for the NBA Finals in 2023-24.

The Mavs have also developed a foundation for the future. They are hopeful that Irving and Doncic can continue to lead the charge for years to come. Meanwhile, there are a number of talented young players on the roster who will likely take steps forward within the next couple of years.

Again, the Mavs would love nothing more than to win a championship this year. The future will remain bright even if they fall short of that goal, though. Or, perhaps they can build a dynasty if they end up earning an NBA Finals victory this season.

At the moment, Jason Kidd and the Mavericks are focused on preparing for Game 4 against the Thunder. Oklahoma City is not going to go down without a fight. Dallas understands the importance of closing out the series as soon as possible.

The Thunder can recapture home court advantage with a victory on Monday night. If the Mavs win, though, the series will head back to Oklahoma with Dallas holding a commanding 3-1 lead.

In other words, Game 4 will be a crucial affair for both teams.
