Walter McCarty was a fan favorite for many years in Boston, often getting praise from Celtics announcer Tommy Heinsohn, whose catch phrase “I love Walta” rang true to many C’s fans. McCarty was a key contributor off the bench in Beantown from 1997-05. His three-point shooting (especially from the corner) was deadly and helped the Celtics reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 2002.
After spending one season with the New York Knicks, McCarty was traded to the Celtics in the 1997 offseason and experienced his best season in Boston. He started in 64 games that season, averaged 9.6 PPG and 4.4 RPG. In the 2003-04 season, McCarty averaged totals of 7.9 PPG and 3.1 RPG while shooting .374% from behind the arc.
In February 2005, Walta was traded to the Suns for a second round pick. After spending one year in Phoenix, McCarty played one more season with the Los Angeles Clippers before retiring from the game.
