Portland Trail Blazers rookie point guard Damian Lillard told USA Today that he is afraid of historic statues.

Before the Blazers played the Washington Wizards Wednesday night, Lillard took a drive around Washington, D.C., and the historical monuments freaked him out.

On Wednesday afternoon, Lillard tweeted, "I like DC. I wana come back and visit the memorials even though I'm scared of statues" and "People I'm only scared of historic statues. Abraham Lincoln , MLK, etc . Had a bad experience at the wax museum lmao."

Before Wednesday's game, Lillard expanded on his bizarre fear.

"I've always been scared of historic stuff like that. If I see statues of Jesus, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. — all that stuff kind of gives me a funny feeling," Lillard said.

During a visit to a wax museum two summers ago before his senior season at Weber State, Lillard said that's when his fear of statues most likely began.

"The last room was Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln — all these big-time historic people, and it looked just like them. Same size," he said. "They had music playing in the room to set the mood, and it just threw me off."

"Ever since then, I'm done. Even at Lake Oswego (near Portland), I drive past the cemetery, and there's a statue of Jesus with his hands up. That even scared me. I don't mess with statues no more.

"It's the idea that they're from so far back, and so big in our history. Just to see something that looks so close to them, it's weird. It freaks me out."

Driving through D.C. Tuesday night with monuments lit up, "was crazy. All I could think of was Abraham Lincoln getting killed," Lillard said.

Even Ford's Theater where Lincoln was shot gives him an uneasy feeling.

"That's nerve-wracking to me," Lillard said. "I would want to go. But when I get in there I would be scared the whole time."

RUMORS & GOSSIP

Agent: Joe Maddon prepared to sit out season if need be

Free-agent manager Joe Maddon doesn't have many viable options if he wants to manage a ballclub in the 2015 season. Three teams (Houston Astros, Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks) have already hired managers, and that really only leaves him with a few choices. The Minnesota Twins are the only club with an actual job opening, but that would be a downgrade from his previous...

Report: Army football enticed recruits with alcohol, women

At a time when few things shock us around the college football world, this has to be a bit surprising. Tom Roeder of the Colorado Springs Gazette is reporting that the Army football program committed multiple infractions of NCAA policies by enticing recruits with alcohol and women. In documents acquired by Roeder and the Gazette, there is evidence that team officials put recruits...

Report: Kobe viewed Dwight Howard's departure as 'positive'

Kobe Bryant seems to be pretty pissed off these days. Although the Black Mamba claims certain things don’t bother him, you can tell by his psychotic work ethic and responses to media questions that the 36 year-old Los Angeles Lakers guard has a chip on his shoulder. Bryant, who’s never had an issue with speaking his opinion, has once again let his thoughts be known on ESPN and...

Federal judge blocks New Jersey sports betting law

Earlier this month, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed a bill into law that overhauled some of the state’s ban on sports betting. Once that bill was signed, many figured it was just the first step in the process and that there would be challenges to the law. That challenge came in the form of the NFL and other professional sports leagues this week, who filed for an injunction...
