Last Friday, Renaldo Balkman took out his frustrations by choking a teammate during a basketball game. It was an embarrassing move for the former NBA player and one that has cost him the ability to play basketball in the Philippines.

Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Chito Salud released a statement on Monday regarding the decision (via The New York Times):

Salud said he took into consideration Balkman’s past record as a player, which included a head-butting incident during a FIBA-Americas game between his Puerto Rico side and Venezuela.

“I also took into consideration Balkman’s evident disregard for local and the host country’s sensibilities highlighted by his choking act on-court in full public view of his own team mate who was trying to pacify him,” Salud said.

“I do encourage passion for the game but I also want to firmly instill a culture of accountability among our players. If one does something that violates the rules and the norms of sportsmanship and decent behavior, he will be made accountable.”

Balkman has also been fined 250,000 Philippine pesos ($6,100) for his transgressions on the court.

The Times reports that no details on whether or not this is a lifetime ban have been released.

  • He is an embarrassment to professional sport and the punishment is appropriate. He should not play basketball anywhere!
  • No wonder he is playing overseas, I just hope David Stern has seen this and doesn't allow this thug back in the NBA. He looks like an angry person who has a big chip on his shoulder.
  • If he does that to a team mate what would he do to a girlfriend or wife. This guy is out of control he needs help.

Carmelo Anthony Says Doctors Can’t Tell Him What is Wrong With His Knee

I am sure this is going to make Knicks fans feel great, knowing that their medical staff has no idea what is going in with Carmelo’s knee. Melo returned to the lineup last night against the Warriors and like the rest of the Knicks, was terrible,  he had this to say courtesy of Pro Basketball Talk. But he also dropped a little bombshell beforehand when asked what the team doctors...

Knicks Sleepwalk Through Loss To Warriors in Disappointing Fashion

Without Carmelo Anthony nor Amar'e Stoudemire healthy enough to hit the hardwood for them, the Knicks still managed to win their fair share of ball games last week, despite not exactly having sufficient go-to options on offense.J.R. New York Knicks: Mike Woodson Must Be More Careful With Carmelo Anthony

By Mike Elworth: Publisher and Editor of HoopStuff Carmelo Anthony came back Monday night against the Warriors, after missing three games with a knee injury. He might as well have stayed in a suit, as they lost the game by 29 points, in a pathetic  92-63 shellacking by Stephen Curry and company. Anthony played 34 minutes and scored a modest 14 points, on 4-15 shooting and grabbed...

The good newsm is that it isn’t as bad as Amare’s knees.
