The Brooklyn Nets reached the postseason for the first time since 2007 after suffering through three-straight seasons of less than 25 wins, including a league-worst 70 losses just four seasons ago. The season, by most standards, would be considered a success, and it happened with an interim coach in PJ Carlesimo. However, a loss in the first round in seven games to a Chicago Bulls team decimated by injuries was not good enough for Russian billionaire-owner Mikhail Prokhorov. Carlesimo was fired over the weekend, and general manager Billy King has been given instructions to shoot high in the coaching search. Those names include legendary coach Phil Jackson, and former Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, according to a report in the NY Post.

Jackson has reportedly stated that he is ready to return to coaching, but he is in the process of serving as a consultant for the Pistons during their head coach search. Anyone would obviously love to land Jackson, but it often is reported that the only two landing spots in his future are the Lakers and the Knicks. However, both appear to be unlikely for the time being. The Lakers appear ready to move forward with Mike D’Antoni for another season, and Mike Woodson has earned another season at the Garden.

Sloan is an interesting choice. He had a hot-and-cool relationship with point guard Deron Williams when they were both in Utah, but Williams appears willing to endorse him. Sloan, himself, recently said that he is ready for a return. He was very successful during his 23-year tenure with the Jazz, missing the playoffs only three times. His two best teams ran into the same problem most other good teams of the 90s did, and that was meeting up with the Jackson-coached Bulls. It is very little surprise that Prokhorov would want to land a big fish like this to lead his team. Ever since becoming owner, he has attempted to move the franchise forward. The Nets spent a lot of money in free agency a year ago and feel they have a team that can compete, though they still desire Dwight Howard in free agency, regardless of the salary cap. But while Prokhorov wants to make a big splash, he is more likely to find himself hiring another retread like Nate McMillan.
