NBA Draft Scouting Report: Belmont's Cade Tyson
USA TODAY Sports

Cade Tyson

Forward | Belmont

Height: 6'7” | Weight: 205 lbs

2024 Draft Age: 20.86

Prospect Profile

A sophomore combo forward that boasts incredible shooting upside and an extremely competitive attitude, Tyson is one of the more underrated players in the country. He can play on the wing or as a traditional forward and already has built a solid resume. Entering the current campaign, he was coming off of a Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year nod, finding a way to really make an impact as a first-year player. He’s really known for being a quality scorer and that’s what he will lean on moving forward. He’s essentially been a starter and in a primary role on the team since day one at the college level.

Really what makes Tyson so dangerous as a scorer is his ability to fill it up from beyond the arc. He can do it in numerous ways and has no problem taking a high volume of triples on any given night. He has great form and the size to shoot over his defender. He’s also an elite free throw shooter, which speaks to his shooting mechanics. If you allow him to shoot in rhythm or give him open looks, he will convert and punish you as a defense.

Tyson is not scared of physicality, which allows him to use his body to pull down rebounds at a solid rate. He’s also a smart player that often finds himself in the right place at the right time.

The big question will be on the defensive end as it relates to his draft stock. While he does generate a decent number of steals, Tyson really isn’t a great athlete. He lacks pop and explosiveness and his feet really aren’t all that quick. As such, he may not be able to defend NBA wings which would force him to play more undersized four at the next level. The one thing he has really going for him on that end is toughness, which can help in some capacity.

Despite playing at Belmont, Tyson was actually a decent recruit and played in some very high levels of competition at the high school level. Cade is the younger brother of Hunter Tyson, who played at Clemson before being selected No. 37 overall in the 2023 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets.

Last season, Tyson’s teammate Ben Sheppard was the only player to outscore him on average, en route to becoming a first round pick last June. Now, Tyson has taken an even bigger role as a sophomore and will look to follow Sheppard and his brother to the NBA.
