Howard

For anyone who isn’t paying attention to what’s happening around the NBA right now, the Houston Rockets are setting up to make a huge splash.

In trading Chase Budinger for the 18th pick in the draft yesterday, they now have picks 14, 16, and 18. The latest rumor is that Kyle Lowry will be dealt in a package with players to either Sacramento for the 5th pick or to Toronto for the 8th pick.

Houston would then have four first round picks, and the plan is to give Orlando an offer for Dwight Howard they can’t refuse.

Four first round picks this year and some players for Dwight Howard? I’m not sure the Magic will find a better package than that.

Houston then hopes to clear enough cap space to sign Deron Williams in free agency, forming a formidable “big two” and crushing the hopes of the Brooklyn Nets and Dallas Mavericks in the process.

There’s one big problem with this plan though: Dwight Howard doesn’t want to play for the Rockets, and David Aldridge has reported that there’s “no chance” Howard doesn’t opt for free agency after next season if he’s dealt to Houston.

Do the Magic care about that though? No, and why should they?

Howard has kept them in limbo for two years now, and since it’s inevitable he will be gone, their job is to get the best return possible for the player. Again, four first round picks in what looks like a pretty good draft this year? There’s no way Orlando is passing that up.

So Houston’s plan is to trade four potential building blocks in the form of draft picks for a star who probably will want out in a year with additional hopes of maybe luring another star, if they can find a way to clear up money after the deal.

Sounds like a huge risk, and it should make for one intriguing Thursday night.

Morey's job could depend on Howard trade

This, it appears, is when Daryl Morey finally pushes the big red button. The Houston Rockets are finally done assembling their stockpile and sorting their parts. They are finally done playing Moneyball. Six years. That was the number for Morey. As he enters his sixth season as the Rockets general manager, the ignition sequence has started. If you want to hold your breath, nobody...

Report: Dwight Howard Trade the Focus of Rockets' Attempted Draft Pick Deals

Most of Thursday's activity in the NBA draft will involve new picks. But that doesn't mean teams looking to sign big-name talent may not make some trades to try to turn lottery choices into championship contenders. The Rockets are among the teams looking to make a trade, according to ESPN.com's Chad Ford and Marc Stein. Houston hopes to put together a trade that will...

Brooklyn Nets surprise Deron Williams with giant Happy Birthday card

The Brooklyn Nets literally drove out of their way to convince free-agent-to-be Deron Williams to stay with the team— after it crosses the Hudson and East Rivers next season— by trucking over a giant Happy Birthday card and parking it outside his Manhattan apartment building. It might be nice to show their All-Star point guard he is wanted in Brooklyn but— with Williams only...

Magic don't solve Howard issue, but raise IQ

ORLANDO -- The Orlando Magic didn't solve the Dwight Howard dilemma on NBA Draft night still clinging to hopes he will stay -- but they certainly raised the team's collective IQ level. NBA Draft Scenarios - Orlando Magic

The Magic finally have their new General Manager, Rob Hennigan, in place, but still need to settle on a coach.  Also, Hennigan will need to tackle the Dwight Howard saga sooner rather than later.  With point guard Jameer Nelson also no guarantee to come back, the Magic face a critical juncture in their immediate future.  With the 19th pick in the 1st round, the Magic certainly...

Rockets Attempting To Acquire Top-10 Picks

The Rockets have been in discussions to move up in the draft to select Andre Drummond, though it could also be part of a larger plan to trade for Dwight Howard.

Five potential sleepers in tonight's Draft

By now, everyone knows the NBA Draft is an inexact science. For every Dwight Howard, there is a Kwame Brown. For every Curtis Borchardt, there is an Al Jefferson. And so on and so forth. The point is, there are plenty of players with lots of talent who get passed up for whatever reason -- whether it be potential red flags, concerns about athleticism or not having an "NBA body...
