When Dwight Howard bolted for Houston last month, at least one man with ties to the Los Angeles Lakers was happy. Howard’s departure meant that Pau Gasol wouldn’t be traded or amnestied this summer, though that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’ll finish the 2013-14 season with the Lakers. According to ESPN Los Angeles’ Dave McMenamin, one NBA executive thinks that the Lakers may part ways with the talented Spaniard if they find themselves in a hole before the trade deadline: “They’ll see where they’re at. At this point I don’t think they want to think about that possibility [of stripping down the team] right now. I don’t think that’s how they think. Their aspirations are a lot higher than most teams every year, and I’m sure they want to see where Kobe’s at come Jan. 1 and see where the team’s at. If they get to the point where it’s the trade deadline and they can tell their team’s not going anywhere, I’m sure they’ll at least consider something with Pau or any other pieces they might be able to move for a longer-term piece.” Of course, this is all hypothetical at this point, but if a trade came along where the Lakers could secure some young, talented pieces in exchange for Gasol – and maybe even some draft picks – then you’d have to imagine that the purple and gold would entertain such a deal, especially if they find themselves well out of the playoff race by the time the trade deadline comes around. Gasol is obviously no stranger to trade rumors, and if he plays well next season (as expected due to being a focal point on offense once again) then there could be a number of teams calling about Pau’s availability. It would be great for Pau to retire as a Laker, but as we all know, this is a business and anybody can be traded at any time. .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 300px; height: 250px; } @media(min-width: 500px) { .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 300px; height: 250px; } } @media(min-width: 800px) { .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 336px; height: 280px; } }
