After failing to land Dwight Howard in free agency, the Dallas Mavericks have now turned their attention to another former Los Angeles Lakers center. No, they aren’t trying to woo Shaquille O’Neal out of retirement, instead they are targeting Andrew Bynum and his ridiculous hair. Bynum spent the entire 2012-13 season on the shelf thanks to ongoing knee problems. He had arthroscopic surgery on both knees in March and never set foot on the court after being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers last summer. The Mavericks are reportedly treading into the Bynum waters very carefully and will make a detailed evaluation of his health, because the 25-year-old is looking for a max contract. If the Mavs shell out that kind of cash they want to make sure the enigmatic big man will actually wind up playing. During his final season in Los Angeles (2011-12) Bynum averaged 18.7 points, 11.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in 35.2 minutes over 60 games. He was a part of Lakers teams that made three-straight NBA Finals appearances and won back-to-back titles. Bynum has always struggled to stay healthy, which is part of the reason the Lakers were so willing to ship him to Philadelphia as part of the four-team trade to sent Dwight Howard to Los Angeles. The 76ers pinned a lot of hope on Bynum helping them reach the next level last season, but he never even got close to seeing the floor. The thing about Bynum’s free agent chase that worries me is that he refuses to work out for any of the teams pursuing him. He will give MRIs and medical reports to any teams that express interest, but he won’t actually suit up and work out. That has to be a huge red flag for anyone interested. For now it appears the Mavericks are in the driver’s seat for him and fans of the team have to be praying he doesn’t turn out to be a total bust like he was in Philadelphia.
