Shaquille O’Neal, retired from the NBA since 2011, has remained one of the league’s most recognizable figures as part of “Inside the NBA” alongside Charles Barkley, Kenny “The Jet” Smith and Ernie Johnson. While the show may be leaving TNT, the four will stay together as “Inside the NBA” moves to ESPN next season.
But O'Neal has ventured into other areas outside of basketball following his playing career. In 2018, the former Magic and Lakers center started his own fast food joint called Big Chicken, which is known for its chicken sandwiches and other chicken-based items. The chain began in Las Vegas and has since expanded into 17 states, England and the Carnival cruise line, with over 350 locations in development.
In 2023, O'Neal revealed a plan to open 36 restaurants in the state of Ohio, where he played for the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, after two years, the state only has one Big Chicken, located near Dayton.
While the chain still plans to move forward with 35 additional restaurants, Big Chicken CEO Josh Halpern confirmed in March that “the franchisee did not follow (O’Neal’s) build-out schedule.” He also suggested they may have a more detailed plan for potential locations within “two to three months.”
Fast forward to September, NBC4 received an update from a Big Chicken spokesperson, saying Big Chicken is still looking for good locations and partners.
“While we don’t have any additional details to share at this time, we’re incredibly grateful for the continued interest and excitement around Big Chicken coming to Columbus,” the spokesperson said. "(The) team is actively seeking the right locations and aspiring, qualified franchise partners who can help bring the brand to life for residents when the time is right.”
As O'Neal still waits on his Ohio expansion, Big Chicken isn't the only fast food company he is involved with. In fact, he has major investments in franchises such as Papa John's, Auntie Anne's, Krispy Kreme and previously Five Guys.
