From the fashion rookies to the seasoned style pros, NBA players across the board are paying close attention to how they present themselves off-the-court. They are developing clothing lines, securing internships with GQ magazine, lining front rows at runway shows, and turning post-game press conferences into sartorial showdowns. NBA TV’s “The Jump” took a look at the league’s fashion phenomenon with the help of former NBA player and menswear designer, Kevin Willis, and stylist to NBA stars, Rachel Johnson.
Willis joined “The Jump” crew to discuss his fashion game. After struggling to find clothing that fit his larger physique, developing a fashion line felt like a natural progression, considering his built in clientele. Willis spoke about the seamless transition from the hardwood to the design room and his line, which aims to make “big and tall” more fashionable. Rachel Johnson, “Style Strategist,” works with a range of NBA stars from Amar’e Stoudemire to Chris Bosh. In addition to discussing the process of dressing her own clients, Johnson offered her thoughts on the style sense of other players.
She believes Russell Westbrook has a sartorial advantage because his smaller size allows him to buy off-the-rack. It opens up options for him, including the ability to purchase endless amounts of those wildly patterned shirts. Kevin Durant’s style was classified by Johnson as “crisp, classic and clean,” Carmelo Anthony was praised for embracing color and Andre Iguodola was credited for being ahead of the trend.
According to Johnson, a 2013 trend to keep an eye for is the lapel pin. The added embellishment will help players to “create an image that is unique and special.” NBA stars like Dwyane Wade and LeBron James have already added the accessory to their off-court wardrobes.
