Nets fire Head Coach Avery Johnson.

According to an ESPN.com report, Brooklyn Nets head coach Avery Johnson has been fired by the organization. This firing is due to the recent struggles that the Nets have showed by winning only three of their last thirteen games after jumping out to an 11-4 start. The report was confirmed by Nets general manager Billy King. Brooklyn Nets owner, Mikhail Prokhorov commented on the firing by telling reporters “The Nets ownership would like to express thanks to Avery for his efforts and to wish him every success in the future”. The Nets were predicted by many to be in the top four or five teams in the eastern conference and also be competing with their cross town rival, The New York Knicks. However with the Nets recent performance in December, the team in now ranked 8th in the East with a record of 14-14 and is clearly taking a back seat to the Knicks at a record of 21-8. It has definitely been a trying last two and a half seasons for Avery Johnson as coach of the Nets. In his time as head coach of the Nets, Johnson has compiled a record of 60-116 with the club. That was all seemingly taking a turn for the better as Johnson was named Eastern Conference Coach Of The Month for the months of October and November. The recent struggles of the team can be pointed towards a few different circumstances such as injuries to their center Brook Lopez and stars such as Joe Johnson and Deron Williams underachieving. However like all things, when a team underperformed such as this Nets team has, the responsibility falls ultimately on the coach of the team. The only question now is, where do the Nets go from here? At the moment, general manager Billy King has not named a new interim coach for the team. That should change sometime later today or early tomorrow for the fact that the Nets next game comes Friday night against the Charlotte Bobcats.
