TMZ has obtained “exclusive video” of the face-to-face confrontation — albeit with a horde of Madison Square Garden security staff separating the two NBA stars — between New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony and Boston Celtics big man Kevin Garnett. A skirmish ensued between the two veteran players during Monday night’s tilt at MSG, a 102-96 Celtics victory. Originally reported by Black Sports Online, tempers flared on the court after KG allegedly said that Anthony’s wife “tastes like Honey Nut Cheerios.” But the real fireworks ensued within the bowels of Madison Square Garden near the bus ramp, where video shows Garnett and Anthony engaging in a hollering match as security successfully keeps them at a safe distance from one another. Unfortunately your browser does not support IFrames. The grainy quality of the video makes it difficult to ascertain at all what the two are saying to one another — although with a careful listening, a few choice and profane utterances can be gleaned from the audio — but the animosity and hostility that exists between the two is plainly evident. Tempers evidently cooled with time and Anthony, without saying exactly what KG said that caused the situation, told reporters following a Knicks practice that what Garnett did say was “something you just don’t say to men, another man.” And if what has been reported is indeed accurate, it’s easy to understand why Melo reacted in the way he did. Anthony also explained his motivation for seeking out Garnett after the game as follows: “My mindset and motive of going back there to see him at the locker room and seeing him at the bus, I wanted to have a one-on-one conversation with him and talk about it like two grown men.” He later insists that he did nothing that warrants any further intervention from the NBA, up to and including any suspension, saying, “Nothing happened for me to be suspended,” adding, “I wanted to talk to K.G. and I think it was something we both needed to get off our chests and see what really was the problem. There were no altercations. It was just words and a conversation we just needed to have.” True enough: If KG did tell Carmelo that La La tasted like Honey Nut Cheerios, Anthony had every right to seek the legendary smack-talker out postgame. Thankfully, it appears that the issue may resolve itself on its own and other than some festering animosity between the two, perhaps this will be the last we hear about the ugly scene. But why Honey Nut Cheerios? That’s one part of the story that is difficult to understand. Why not some other breakfast cereal? Don’t get me wrong, a nice, big bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios is a great way to start your day, it just seems like an odd choice. Although just imagine what would have went down if Garnett said Anthony’s wife tasted like some less savory and honey-sweetened cereal, say, something like Shredded Wheat or Grape Nuts, or even worse, Puffed Rice. Ugh. Does anybody else remember that stuff? Things could have gotten real ugly.
