The Knicks and Nets have things going in the right direction. Both are off to great starts with the Knicks being the last unbeaten team in the league until losing to a tough Memphis squad on Friday. The 6-1 start is one of the best in team history and they really seem to be putting things together after the last two disappointing first round playoff exits. The team has seen back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 00-01, and look to continue both playoff and winning season streaks. Of course, their big run last year came with Carmelo out of the lineup and this years start is without Amare Stoudemire. Maybe there isn’t room on the floor for both. The Brooklyn Nets have built up a 5-2 start which the buzz may be bigger than the feat. The team has victories over the likes of Orlando (3-5), Toronto (2-7), Cleveland (2-7). They did however beat a solid Celtics team last time out. The Nets still may not be a contender but they are on the right path and have helped create the buzz around the team in their debut season in the Barclays Jay-Z Thunderdome in Brooklyn. DeRon Williams is a great point and has options with Brook Lopez coming in to his own and elite scorer Joe Johnson on the wing. The team is currently in the midst of a 5 game winning streak after starting 1-2. I have always heard that New York was the center of basketball, of course with the Knicks not winning a championship since ’73 and the Nets not winning much of anything (outside of the Kidd years) it’s been hard to prove! With both teams off to good starts and the excitement that seems to building it may make the New York teams a must watch for any NBA fans. It’s good to have New York teams in the discussion of good teams and provides a rebirth of some old Knick rivalries with the Celtics, Pacers, and Bulls and even a new one with the Heat. The Nets have a chance to make lots of noise if they can out gun the Knicks in the Atlantic…plus their owner Mikhail Prokhorov could be a media darling if he could start saying, “Opulence, I has it”
