Anthony Gruppuso/USA TODAY Nikola Vucevic had a major skill to improve upon this offseason. He posted the third most double doubles in the league last year, yet something was missing on the interior. It was a toughness and paint and rim protection that the elite big men have. Vucevic was only in his second year and had a lot to learn. He spent most of that season without the support of Glen Davis, a more rugged defender, behind him. The defensive onus fell on Vucevic. There were times he played well and times he struggled. Jacque Vaughn came into the season saying the goal for Vucevic and the other bigs was to do a better job challenging at the rim, blocking shots and protecting the paint. Already, it seems, that work has paid off with Jason Maxiell, Solomon Jones and Kyle O'Quinn able to provide some muscle behind him. "It definitely helps having good player slike Max and Glen around you," Vucevic said. "I think we fit together pretty well -- ...

Magic shopping Jameer Nelson for a 1st round pick

This comes as no surprise. Orlando is still recovering from the loss of Dwight Howard. After drafting Victor Oladipo, Orlando envisions turning him into a point guard, that’s when rumors circulated that Jameer Nelson’s time in Orlando was near an end. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, Orlando is listening to offers involving draft picks. […]

Magic announce plans to open Hall of Fame at Amway Center

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Orlando Magic, which just embarked on its 25th season in the NBA, announced Friday plans to create a Hall of Fame honoring players and team officials for their contributions to the franchise's history. The exhibit will be inside the Amway Center and designed so fans can view the displays on game nights. Among those in attendance for the announcement were...

Magic Musings: Orlando opens at home with dominating win

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Their fortunes may have fluctuated over the course of 25 years. But almost without fail, the Orlando Magic have looked sharp when it comes to their home openers. That habit continued as they used strong efforts from Arron Afflalo and Maurice Harkless to defeat the New Orleans Pelicans 110-90. The Magic led by as many as 30 points in improving their record to 1-2...

Victor Oladipo Plays His First NBA Game Against Indiana

The Magic lost, but it’s ok. It’s just the first game, and the first game was surely a special game for the number 2 pick Victor Oladipo! He scored 12 points, 2 assists, 3 rebounds and a steal for his Orlando team. This was a special game for him. Not only was this his first official NBA game, but Indiana was ...The post Victor Oladipo Plays His First NBA Game Against Indiana...

25 Years of Magic: Not so Happy Halloween

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of Orlando Magic basketball. The team itself will be celebrating with look backs at the team's stories history and recognition of the team's greatest players (Tracy McGrady is due in town Friday for a night honoring him). Orlando Magic Daily loves celebrating Magic history (probably too much). And so each day this season, we will dig into...

25 Years of Magic: The sister team

Magic beat Pelicans for first win

Arron Afflalo had 30 points and Maurice Harkless added 20 points and eight rebounds as the Orlando Magic got their first win of the season, hammering the New Orleans Pelicans 110-90 on Friday night. Anthony Davis led winless New Orleans with 26 points and 17 rebounds, while Jrue Holiday added 17 points and five assists. Orlando seized control in the second quarter when Harkless...

Pelicans slip to 0-2 on season after loss to Magic

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Arron Afflalo had 30 points and Maurice Harkless added 20 points and eight rebounds as the Orlando Magic got their first win of the season, hammering the New Orleans Pelicans 110-90 on Friday night. Anthony Davis led winless New Orleans with 26 points and 17 rebounds, while Jrue Holiday added 17 points and five assists. Orlando seized control in the second...

Solomon Jones out indefinitely with torn meniscus

Solomon Jones daringly proclaimed at media day at the start of training camp that he would make the Magic's roster, even as a long shot. For the Mount Dora native who grew up cheering on Tracy McGrady and the Magic, it was going to be a dream to walk out in a Magic uniform in front of friends and family in his home town. Half that dream came true when Jones played in the...

Day 1: Lance Stephenson, Xavier Henry impress in 2013 season opener

Stephenson filled up the stat sheet. I'm not sold on Andrew Nicholson's big night (18 points on 8-of-10 shooting, two threes, four rebounds and a steal). Tobias Harris sat with a sprained ankle, and the Magic were also without Big Baby. And Jason Maxiell was worthless (scoreless in 26 minutes). I am buying Lance Stephenson (19 points on 8-of-12 shooting, two threes...

Timberwolves work overtime to teach Magic lesson

Brace Hemmelgarn/USA TODAY Through the first two games of the season, the Orlando Magic are learning just how important execution is. Even if it is mostly the veterans carrying the load late in the games or in the key moments, the lesson cannot be lost on the young players who were in the game, on the bench or on the sidelines coaching. The Magic fought back from a 17-point...

Pelicans-Magic Preview

Magic coach Jacque Vaughn remains encouraged even with Orlando on the brink of matching its worst start in eight seasons. The New Orleans Pelicans are trying to learn from their own slow start to 2013-14. The Magic will attempt to avoid a three-game skid Friday night when they open their home schedule against the Pelicans. Orlando (0-2) followed a season-opening 97-87 defeat at...

Andrew Nicholson Breaks ESPN

Despite the two nationally telecast Opening Night games (with the Heat/Bulls starting at 8:00 PM EST), the season really started at 7:00 with the Magic against the Pacers.  Non-fantasy players probably didn’t know this game ever happened.  All the sudden in the second quarter, Andrew Nicholson just went off, going 8-9 in the first half with 18 points.  Next thing you know...

The tanking conundrum

Brian Spurlock/USA TODAY We are only one game into the season and the shouts about team tanking have already begun. First it came when the Magic gave up the first 12 points of the game against the Pacers. Then it came again when the Magic opted to keep Andrew Nicholson on the bench the entire third quarter despite his 18 points in the first half. These calls will be coming...
