After having followed many of the other former North Carolina basketball players it’s time to look at yet another, seven foot center Brendan Haywood, who first was waived by the Dallas Mavericks courtesy of the amnesty clause and then got picked up by the Charlotte Bobcats. The eleven year veteran’s $8.3 million salary this season and $27.2 million altogether will be wiped off the Mavs’ books cap wise, however he will still be owed the full amount left on the next three years of his contract. However with Charlotte now paying Haywood about $ 2 million per season it means that his former franchise is still going to pay over $ 6 million per year to their former big man. Not bad for a player who averages 7.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks for his career.

NBA’s 30 teams just notified that Brendan Haywood has been claimed on waivers by Bobcats

Brendan Haywood, who has played first for the Washington Wizards and then with the Dallas Mavericks for his double digit year career, has several years left on his deal with Marc Cuban’s franchise. Having watched the veteran 7 footer play from his years in Chapel Hill and throughout his seasons in the National Basketball Association it appears that the big man is on the down curve of his career. He now goes to a team where the owner, Michael Jordan, once played with him in the nation’s capital. With the Bobcats not having to pay much for the 32 year old’s services this is a good move for the Charlotte franchise for the current season. On the other hand the Bobcats still do have to pay Haywood until he is in his mid 30′s.

In the end this was a good move for both as the Bobcats can use veteran players to try and change the mentality of the team and the center needed a place to land after being cut by the Mavericks. I have to say I am intrigued to see how Charlotte will use the former North Carolina basketball player and if the move will be beneficial for the center, who has been both a starter and a sub while in the NBA, in the long run. As I do with all present and former Tar Heels let me wish Brendan Haywood all the best in his next basketball chapter.
