Nuggets HC Michael Malone agrees to multiyear contract extension

The Denver Nuggets have made it to the NBA playoffs in three straight seasons and are likely headed for their fourth straight appearance this spring. On Wednesday, the team announced that they're extending the stay of their head coach who's led them in the recent string of postseason appearances.

Per team policy, the details of the extension weren't released.

Malone's NBA coaching career began as an assistant and scout with the New York Knicks during the 2003-04 campaign, a gig he held for two years. He was then an assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers under Mike Brown for five seasons from 2005-10, a span that saw the organization make the Eastern Conference semifinals four times and the NBA Finals once, as well as the rise to stardom of LeBron James.

For the 2010-11 campaign, Malone had an assistant coaching job with Monty Willams' New Orleans Hornets before he jumped to Mark Jackson's Golden State Warriors for two seasons and the beginning of the Stephen Curry-Klay-Thompson-Draymond Green era. Malone then earned his first head-coaching job in 2013-14 with the Sacramento Kings, but was fired early in the 2014-2015 campaign.

He was hired as the Nuggets head coach in June 2015 and has compiled a 309-237 record over seven seasons with the franchise.

"This extension is well deserved for Coach Malone and one we are very excited to announce," Nuggets Governor E. Stanley Kroenke said. "You can easily point to the on-court success that Michael has brought and the improvements the team has made each year under his watch, and you can also point to the selfless, hard-working culture that has developed and grown during his tenure. We look forward to Coach Malone continuing on the sidelines as we all work toward our goal of bringing an NBA Championship to the city of Denver."
