With weeks of the San Antonio Spurs seemingly having a tryout for who ultimately will backup Tony Parker with their abundance in point guards, it seems Nando De Colo may have won the spot. De Colo, a rookie this year in the NBA, has played well for the team especially when he's had to start. That may have been what pushed him over Patrick Mills and Gary Neal for the backup role. De Colo is averaging 3.4ppp and 1.9apg in 11.6mpg but as a starter he's been averaging an impressive 12ppg and 6apg in 33.5mpg. The Spurs are known as an organization that rewards its players when they're doing well and it's apparent that Nando De Colo has earned his spot as Tony Parker explained via Le10Sport.com. He has a very good game.....He managed the team, controlled the tempo, and made good passes. For a rookie, he had a very good game. He is in the rotation. It was he who replaces me when I go out. Nando has earned a spot that, while it was up for the taking, was very competitive between De Colo and the other two point guards the Spurs have on the roster. Cory Joseph is also on the team roster, but hasn't seemed to bet oo ready to play in the NBA yet. Patty Mills has played some minutes as backup point guard, but that duty was mainly entrusted to Gary Neal early on the in the season. Neal is averaging 9.9ppg but only 1.7apg in 22mpg. Neal's history isn't shy on showing that he's not a traditional point guard and that he's not much of a passer either. Those factors are probably what opened the race for De Colo, who brings in a versatile game to the position. Nando's game may be bringing flash backs to Spurs fans as he plays similar to former guard Brent Barry. De Colo shares characteristics with Barry that helped the team win two NBA titles with Brent as a backup. De Colo can shoot the three point ball, pass, and play multiple positions including having the advantage of being taller in the point guard position. Although both are similar, Barry wasn't known as a defender while De Colo has surprised the team with improving defense. Hopefully De Colo can keep this up, especially going into the playoffs where the San Antonio Spurs will need a shorter rotation and reliable players inserted in those roles. De Colo earning his spot with the team is a bright spot for him and may also inspire younger players that they have a chance to crack the main rotation with the Spurs, who are playing a unselfish form of basketball that may attract players to come play in San Antonio. One thing's for sure, we'll be seeing more of De Colo in the coming games as Parker's backup off the bench.
