State Of The Celtics:
During today's Celtics practice, Paul Pierce admitted that he was taken aback by the fact that the club didn't bring back reserve point guard Delonte West during the offseason. (ESPN Boston)
"I thought he’d definitely be back," said Pierce. "It’s hard to kind of develop chemistry when you bring a lot of new faces in each and every year. That’s why I wanted him to come back. He was injured a lot, but he really adds something to the Dallas team that they probably lost in J.J. Barea and Tyson Chandler -- you know, a guy who can come in and give them energy defensively and possibly give them a boost offensively also."
Asked if he was surprised by the team's decision to go in another direction, Pierce admitted he was.
"It was a big surprise, because I thought he would be one of the main guys to come back," said Pierce. "I thought he did so well in the time he played and in the playoffs, so it was a bit of a surprise. But I’m happy for him that he’s found [a comfortable situation] there in Dallas. He’s in the starting lineup right now, and I wish him the best."
Join the club, Paul. I have absolutely no inside information as to why the Celtics and Delonte parted ways, but it appeared that the team wasn't exactly bending over backwards to bring him back. They probably could have offered him for the league minimum and he would have taken it, especially since that's exactly what he's getting in Dallas right now. He didn't want to leave Boston and the majority of the fans loved him for the energy and intensity he brought off the bench.
Was Delonte a nuisance somehow? Was he some sort of distraction in the locker room? The way Pierce and other former teammates talk about him, he seems to be pretty well-liked. Yes, he was injury-riddled last season and maybe that was a turn-off for the front office of a team that desperately needs guys to stay as healthy as possible. Still, he knew Doc's system and having West be the leader of the second unit would have made that group's transition a little smoother. Don't get me wrong, I like what Keyon Dooling's done off the bench and I feel that he can be an asset off the bench. He's already shown that he can hit from the outside if you leave him open. But West has a grittiness and a toughness about him that the Celtics could really use when the starters are resting. I hope Dallas enjoys watching him play.

It’s nearly impossible to tell when all 65 Fox affiliates are showing live basketball anymore because they don’t put ‘live’ in the upper right corner so we thought this was some replay of Mavs-Pistons. It’s actually ‘live’ tonight and we just happened to be 65 channels beyond where our normal surfing ends. Not even five minutes after turning it to the game, we came...
The highlight for many athletes when winning a championship is the visit to the White House and meeting the President, but Delonte West will not be traveling with the Dallas Mavericks to meet President Obama because of weapons charges and is banned from the White House. West pleased guilty to weapons and traffic charges when he was pulled over in 2009, and police found three guns...
The Dallas Mavericks are set to visit the White House on Monday but sadly teammate Delonte West will be unable to attend. Why you may ask? West's previous weapons charges will prevent him from entering the oval office as he told the Star-Telegram:“I’m banned from going to the White House, so I’m not going to make it,’’ West said after tonight’s 96-81 win over the New...
Nobody seems to know what the Dallas reporter said to Delonte West that triggered the former Cavalier’s twitter rant of last Saturday, and nobody knows what former Plain Dealer Cavs beat writer Brian Windhorst did to draw West’s specific ire therein
Not one of the tweets at issue, but still a good one.
Larry Brown Sports has the details here, including a response from Windhorst...
There always will be a bond and affection between Delonte West and the Celtics. And while the guard’s departure after last season was a surprise, he returned to Boston last night all smiles playing with the defending champion Mavericks.

After the Dallas Mavericks lost by 22 points (93-71) to the San Antonio Spurs on January 5th, the defending NBA Champions fell to 3-5 on the season. Jason Kidd injured his back during the first quarter of that game, and has been sidelined for the last three games since as a result. In response, Head Coach Rick Carlisle called on Delonte West to handle the point guard duties. In those...
The Dallas Mavericks have earned themselves a visit to the White House on Monday, as each of the 2011 champions will be awarded a meeting with President Barack Obama, along with new editions to the 2011-12 Mavs outfit. All save for one Maverick, oft-troubled off guard Delonte West.
West, who had a high profile arrest over two years ago while under the influence of prescribed medication...
Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
“We don’t have a big body like (Kendrick) Perkins or a guy like Big Baby (Glen Davis),” Paul Pierce [stats] said. “But it doesn’t have to come in a size package. It has to be, ‘How bad do you want...
It was a frustrating night at the TD Garden tonight as the Celtics drop their second straight game, this time to the defending champion Dallas Mavericks, 90-85. In a game where Paul Pierce struggled and only took 5 shots and Ray Allen was only 3 of 8 from the field, Rajon Rondo tried mightily to [...]

President Barack Obama is beginning the week by hosting the NBA champion Mavericks. But Delonte West, signed by the Mavs before this season, will not be able to join the team because of a criminal record that did not pass a background check.
