Stupid Sports Blog:
Unless you've been living under a rock -- and if you have been, what is your rent plus utilities? -- you've seen the Spurs' Manu Ginobili swat a bat out of mid-air during a game over the weekend. If you haven't, click the freaking play button already so we can get on the same page.
Of course, PETA has come out and slammed Ginobili. I feel like the release is dumb enough where it could be FJM'd and we haven't done that in a while around these parts, so why the heck not?
On Saturday, a bat found his or her way into the San Antonio Spurs game. (Some speculate that the animal didn't just fly in by accident.)
Really? It wasn't accident? Like, the bat rushed the floor like a drunk dude to get on TV? Or someone snuck a bat into the arena unbeknownst to security? I guess the "some" would be "PETA" in this story.
The bat, of course, did what anybody would do in such a terrifying, unfamiliar situation—try to get the heck out of there—which, naturally, delayed the game.
I love the PETA thing of giving animals human-like traits, calling it "anybody" and saying how it was trying to get out of the arena. And how do you know that's what anybody would do? If I stumbled into a Spurs game for free, I'd stick around and watch. I wouldn't be terrified, either. I'm not even sure if you can say the bat was terrified. Maybe that bat was having a grand old time.
Until, that is, Spurs guard Manu Ginobili smacked the bat out of the air and slammed the animal into the hardwood court. Sports blogs across the 'net have been replaying the video of Manu in action as they celebrate his quick reflexes.
Yeah they have. It was bad ass. I saw a documentary once about capturing a bat, and it seemed hard when two guys tried to do it. So totally, Manu one-handing that bat to the ground was awesome.
To bludgeon a 4-ounce animal to death, it takes either a small man or a totally unthinking one—with no respect or consideration for lives humbler than his own.
First off, Manu didn't bludgeon the animal. Look. He smacked it out of the air. To bludgeon something, you need to have an object in your hand, like Captain Caveman. So already, your take on this thing isn't based on what really happened, since Manu didn't use a club.
Second off, Manu is 6-foot-6. I know he looks like a small man on the court, but the dude's big. I guess a small man could take down a bat, but in this situation, it was quite a large one.
Third off, how can you call this bat humble? It thought so much of itself that it decided to see a game for free, then rush the court. So in a way, we treated the bat like we would a human, and isn't that what PETA is all about? If I ran on the floor and Manu choke-slammed me to the ground, would anyone would complain? Really, the people at fault here are PETA. Jerks.
This is a time when athletes in particular need to be on their best behavior around any animal and show that they have brains and a heart, not just reactionary brawn.
Huh? A time? What time? Be kind to animals while the unemployment rate is so high? I don't get the "this is a time" thing. Is that a threat? Are you going to sick Bill Maher on an NBA player?
Bats always try to avoid contact with humans ...
Love the use of "always" here when we have video of a bat surrounding itself with humans. Did a bat write this press release?
... and there are plenty of easy ways to keep bats out of a basketball arena (or your home).
Yeah, because apparently all the doors and walls and windows we have aren't getting it done. Way to blame the construction teams.
We hope that the next time someone's life is on the line ...
A bat isn't a someone.
... Manu Ginobili will take just a few seconds to think before he acts.
Based on the video, he waited three seconds before reacting and killing that stupid bat, so really, he did what you asked of him now.
