Phil Jackson might not coach in another NBA game again, but he still wants to be involved with the sport. Luckily for fans of the purple and gold, he says he wants to help his old team, the Los Angeles Lakers. In an interview with Mike Bresnahan from the L.A. Times, Jackson said that he wants to “help [the Lakers] move forward” and acknowledged the mammoth task that Mike D’Antoni has in front of him: Jackson doesn’t have any hard feelings. “I want people to know that I really want to support the Lakers and I’m here to support Jeanie in her effort to keep this franchise vital and vibrant. I have every intention of trying to help them move forward,” Jackson said. He even seemed to sympathize with D’Antoni. “Having the opportunity to coach the team for 11 years and going to the Finals seven times, winning five championships, it’s a ridiculous run. The expectations” weigh heavily, he said. “John Wooden’s presence at UCLA was a difficult thing for guys to get over. Some good coaches came in behind him and had limited success. It took 20, 25 years to win a championship.” Firstly, it would be great to see Phil come back to the Lakers as a consultant, but it appears that he’ll just hold an unofficial role for the time being. The Zen Master is obviously engaged to Jeanie Buss, so his voice is still heard one way or another. He could be a useful piece next summer, too: when the Lakers attempt to woo big name free agents in July, Jackson would be a great figure to have in the meetings. In 2010, Pat Riley used his rings as a way to lure LeBron James to Miami – the Zen Master could possibly show off some jewellery of his own during next year’s free agency period. Also, until another coach comes along and can really have some success with this team, everyone is always going to want Jackson. The only way those “We want Phil!” chants will ever really go away is by winning another NBA championship. .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 300px; height: 250px; } @media(min-width: 500px) { .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 300px; height: 250px; } } @media(min-width: 800px) { .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 336px; height: 280px; } }

The Los Angeles Lakers don’t need Steve Nash

When I first heard that the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Steve Nash on July 11, 2012, I was borderline irate. I thought it was one of the biggest mistakes that General Manager Mitch Kupchak and the Lakers’ organization had made. I was never a fan of Steve Nash and having him be a part of the team I supported wasn’t exactly music to my ears. (Photo Credit: Reed Saxon/AP) However...

Lakers' Nash could sit out second game of back-to-back

The latest installment was unveiled in the Steve Nash Injury Watch. It's "very possible" the 39-year-old point guard will sit out the second night of season-opening back-to-back games, Lakers Coach Mike D'Antoni said Sunday. Somewhere you can hear Nash's fantasy value drop. More important to the Lakers is real-life value and what they can squeeze out of him...

Lakers Chris Kaman Says Clippers Will Never Win Championships

Former Clipper and current Laker Chris Kaman decided to stir the pot on the eve of the L.A. showdown tomorrow night. Kaman spent eight long seasons with the Clippers, so he knows a thing or two about losing tradition. Times are different now, the Clippers are loaded with talent capable of reaching the finals, while the Lakers will be fortunate to make the playoffs. The Clippers talent...

If you’re a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and you’re partial to a little NBA betting, you may be interested to hear that the bookies have the Lakers at 59/1 odds of winning the 2014 NBA championship. D'Antoni: Politics Made Offense Prefer Dwight Over Gasol Last Season

Mike D'Antoni did not enjoy marginalizing Pau Gasol in an attempt to placate Dwight Howard last season with the Los Angeles Lakers. "It was very uncomfortable," D'Antoni said. "I knew I was messing on (Gasol) last year. That's not fair to him. But that was the situation we were in. How do we make the best of it? I was just trying to make the best of it...

Steve Nash may miss Wednesday’s back-to-back game at Golden State

Before training camp started, Mike D’Antoni hinted that Steve Nash may sit back-to-back games this season in order to keep his body rested. It now appears that this strategy may be brought into effect as early as Wednesday. The Lakers open their season on Tuesday when they face the Los Angeles Clippers and then will travel to the Bay Area for a game the following night against...

Kobe’s comeback

In the passionate and intense world of Lakers basketball, one man is at the center of it all: Kobe Bryant. Bryant has been a fixture in the city of Los Angeles for quite some time now and it is truly devastating to think that his run will conclude relatively soon. Ever since his teenage years, the bright lights of LA have forcefully beamed down on Bryant and watching his story unfold...

Pau Gasol: 'Better' than expected

The optimism surrounding Los Angeles Lakers veterans Steve Nash and Pau Gasol has gone in split directions since training camp opened last month. Gasol came in unsure if he would be able to participate because of offseason procedures on both of his knees, but ended up leading the team in scoring (13.7 points) while chipping in 6.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game in the preseason...

Kobe has started talks on contract extension with the Lakers

Kobe Bryant is an old 35, he's in his final year of a current deal that will pay him $30.5 million this season, the highest salary in the NBA. He's making that much, and the Lakers don't even know when he's coming back. The Lakers had the option to use their amnesty clause this summer on Kobe, but they used it on Metta World Peace, man I hate calling him that. I...
