This season has been quite a rollercoaster ride for the Phoenix Suns. Obviously they lost Amar’e Stoudemire in the offseason, but they also made some other significant changes to their roster during the season as well. Despite all the changes, the Suns are still in position to try and make a second half playoff run. The Suns are 8-2 in their last 10 games and this past week they won two games at the final buzzer thanks to Channing Frye, which has them breathing down the neck of the Memphis Grizzlies for the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference.
Grant Hill joined The Dan Patrick Show to talk about his new role on the Suns, his play as of late, and the big week that Channing Frye has had hitting two buzzer beaters.
On him following up his 34 point game with a four point game:
“Hey we have enough guys who score. It was a back-to-back and my job was to try and contain Deron Williams, which is not an easy thing. Different night, different goals or roles. We had it going with the pick and roll so we had to kinda keep going with it.”
Channing Frye’s play this past week:
“Yeah Channing had a great week with two buzzer beaters but you know what? Channing has had a really good season. He’s gotten better. Last season he was primarily a spot up shooter and he still does that, but he’s posting the ball well, he’s passing, he’s rebounding, and defending. His overall game has gotten better. For him to hit two back-to-back game winners that’s huge. His ego, no one on the team can talk to him. He’s in a whole ‘nother world. No, I’m happy for him and he bailed us out of both of those games.”
Whether or not he loves his new role as a defensive stopper:
“Do I love it? I embrace it. Love is kind of strong. I do like the challenge. It’s weird. I think as my career has gone on it’s sort of evolved. Early on it was sort of relying on your offensive production. The ability to create plays and score and assist, and now it’s going out there and trying to be a lockdown defender. It is a challenge. There’s a lot of great players in this league and to be asked to guard them on a nightly basis is kind of fun, but you have to be up for the challenge, be disciplined, and you gotta take it personal. When someone scores on you you’ve got to be upset.”
