Pistons HC says Suns response to Isaiah Stewart-Drew Eubanks altercation was 'irresponsible'

Detroit Pistons head coach Monty Williams said Wednesday night that the Phoenix Suns' initial response to an altercation between power forwards Drew Eubanks and Isaiah Stewart was "irresponsible."

Early Thursday morning, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that Phoenix police had arrested Stewart for assault and the Pistons fourth-year pro had been issued a citation and released.

According to a report by James Edwards III and Shams Charania of The Athletic, Detroit's big man punched Eubanks in the face in a Footprint Center parking lot prior to the game.

“Around 4:45 p.m. Phoenix police officers were working in a security capacity during a Suns home game at Footprint Arena when they were called to a fight between two players inside the arena’s parking lot,” Phoenix Police Sergeant Phil Krynsky said in a statement, per the report. “When the officers arrived, they were directed by security to the players involved. The players were identified as 27-year-old Drew Eubanks and 22-year-old Isaiah Stewart. Officers spoke to both players involved and a number of people who witnessed the incident. They learned there was an argument between both players as they arrived at the arena. Witnesses said the argument escalated when they saw Stewart punch Eubanks, causing a minor injury. Both men were separated by security which ended the fight. Detectives responded to investigate the incident and collect evidence. Stewart was arrested for assault and issued a citation and released. The investigation remains active.”

The Suns' sixth-year man out of Oregon State played 18 minutes in his team's win, recording six points, six rebounds, two steals and one block. Stewart was already set to miss the contest due to a sprained ankle.

When discussing the Suns' statement, Williams said "That did not need to happen. There is a time for the information to be gathered, and then you can make a statement."

Stewart was involved in a notable on-court scuffle with Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James during his second season in November 2021.

During the incident, Stewart was ejected in the third quarter after the four-time MVP hit the youngster in the face and he responded by charging at "King James" multiple times. Stewart had to be held back by teammates, Lakers players and officials.

The 22-year-old was suspended for two games for his actions.
